My father recently stepped up to the plate and got High Speed connection. (AFTER 5 YEARS) LOL. Heres the problem when he goes through regular system shutdown. Within 2 minutes the system restarts itself he cannot shut it down. The cable company wants to charge him $170.00 to come and fix the problem. He is on a fixed income so this is not an option. He said "dial-up no problems upgrade and your screwed." He is not to internet savy. So I said I would post it here for him. Maybe you guys can help out. They told him it was a network problem but he has no network. He disabled the network card and LAN card, but nothing. We have posted at Geekstogo.com but no-one has answered the topic in 2 weeks. so if you can help us we will close the topic over there. Thank you.
Greetings Roofie(MTL)

Sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your Fathers computer.

It would be really handy to know at least something about the computer your working with. Model, make, and the operating system it has. But with out any of that information here is some GENERAL advise about the usual suspects.

A common cause of system restarts is the Wake On Lan setting.

The Wake On setting allows a computer to be automatically booted (or turned on) if it receives LAN packets intended for it, or if the modem line rings. Typically, the Wake on LAN settings would be adjusted through your computer’s BIOS setting. If you have checked the BIOS though and the Wake On LAN setting is disabled, it is possible that Windows might be responsible for waking the system up. To find out, open the Device Manager and locate your system’s network card. Right click on the card and select the Properties command from the resulting shortcut menu. When you do, you will see the network card’s properties sheet. Now, select the Power Management tab and verify that the Allow This Device To Bring The Computer Out Of Standby option is deselected.

The other thought is that maybe your are not getting a true shutdown. Can you verify it is truely shutting down and not going into standby or suspend?

I supose you could always unplug it or use the toggle switch usually located on the back of the powersupply if so equipted if you need to be sure it is down while you hash out the cause.

Give this a go and let us know how you make out.

Regards

Kaz

If you dont get a response from me, it probly because I am away from the computer alot and others may pickup where I leave off.
Thank you KAZZOO for your reply. After doing some research deeper into the problem itself I found that it isnt too uncommon. I found this Link somewhere and it was very helpful in diagnosing the possibilities. http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm . So for those of you who are experiencing this . What I found my BIOS settings were ok, but I had a hidden "wake on" in my device manager. You can check in:

CONTROL PANEL / ADMINISTRATOR TOOLS / COMPUTER MANAGEMENT / DEVICE MANAGER / ETHERNET ADAPTOR / ADVANCED TAB /

Then under PROPERTY It will say "wake setting" or something like that select that then under VALUE change this to NONE

This worked for me. His computer was set to work on a network from Factory. So when he turned off his computer the dayam modem would send him the signal to turn on.
This happened as soon as he had cable modem installed. So if you have a similar situation and find this helpful . well then by all means give it a try . We also did AVG scan in safemode after to see if anything was in there . Clean report.

I do appreciate the site and help you give us all ..This topic has been RESOLVED . ready to close. Thanks KAZZOO again for the quick response.
