Apologies for a second post. This is for my friend's computer this time who has been hit with a major virus in the memory and cannot be removed with Avast Antivirus. There is also a large quantity of adware detected using the NoAdware program. I would appreciate any recommendations in providing maintenance for this particular desktop PC.

Howdy rookierook,

Welcome to WTT. Infection is showing here, and also an unusual Active Desktop selection for some Ask.com webpage. As active desktop pages are known hijack points I would wonder if your friend chose this particular one. Let's start a scan right of then check after.


Be sure to temporarily disable all other protective software when doing these next steps.


Download ComboFix.exe from here to your desktop, and click the downloaded file to run the repair.

When the command window opens, select 1 (and Enter). Allow the scan to run. When completed a text window will appear - please copy/paste the contents back here. This log can also be found at C:\ComboFix.txt.

A caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

Then post back a new HijackThis log and the combofix.txt log please.
