Hello again everone.

I received this email from comcast...

Dear Comcast Subscriber:
ACTION REQUIRED: Comcast has determined that your computer(s) have been used to send unsolicited email ("spam"), which is generally an indicator of a virus. For your own protection and that of other Comcast customers, we have taken steps to prevent further transmission of spam from your computer(s).

Comcast.Net WebMail Users
If you use a web browser to access your email, this change will not affect your service. However, it is important that you take steps to remove the virus and secure your computer(s). This can be done by using the FREE McAfee Antivirus and Firewall software available from Comcast on the Comcast Security Channel at www.comcast.net/security or by using other popular antivirus solutions that are widely available.

Third-Party Mail Client Users (Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.)
If you use Outlook Express, the steps we have taken to protect the Comcast network will not allow you to send email until you apply a simple one click fix available at http://www.comcastsu...m/alternateport. While this will restore your ability to send mail it is still important to remove any possible viruses from your computer. This can be done by using the FREE McAfee Antivirus and Firewall software available from Comcast on the Comcast Security Channel at www.comcast.net/security or by using other popular antivirus solutions that are widely available.

If you are using a third-party client other than Outlook Express (Outlook, Eudora, Thunderbird, etc.), please visit http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/TB25.

Comcast is focused on providing a secure internet experience for all of our customers. Please visit the Comcast Security Channel regularly at www.comcast.net/security to stay up to date with the latest security threats, products, and services

If you have additional questions please visit (www.comcast.net/help).

Thank you for choosing Comcast!

Sincerely,
Comcast Customer Security Assurance

I use Outlook Express 6 on this computer & I have noticed alot of spam that I am recieving & have been sending it to the block senders list. I scanned with kaspersky online, AVG in safemode & HJT log...I had Avast Pro but it has expired and I will be purchasing NOD32 from ESET. I want to make sure this computer is clean before installing NOD32...Here are the reports and log.

Hello and welcome to the forums

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

With AVG Anti-Spyware, if you click on the Infections icon, then it will show you all the items in Quarrantine and you can remove them that way. Just click Select All then Remove Finally

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick while its running. That may cause it to stall

The forum is run by volunteers who donate their time and expertise.

Logs will be closed if you haven't replied within 3 days

Hello LDTate,

Thank you for your help.
I purchased, downloaded & installed NOD32 the other day so I had to delete all the other AV's (Avast, AVG & Kaspersky) because NOD32 would not load with these AV's. I am still receiving alot of spam email and do not know what to do to get rid of them. Here is the Combofix log and HJT log.

Looks like you're running 2 anti-virus programs.

Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with each other, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove either:
Eset
Norton / Symantec

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

The only AV is ESET. The Norton Symantic that you see is Norton Personal Firewall & Norton System Works....Computer is running great. It's the unwanted spam email that I want to get rid of...

I suggest you post the email issues here:
http://forums.whatth...email_f123.html

Let them know we cleaned the pc already.

Before doing the above:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    • Posted Image
  • If shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.
