WIN XP suspected malware infection

Hi there

My first edition centrino laptop has gone from being quite nippy in normal use, to be VERY slow, stuttering and suffering from disk thrashing and a delay of up to 30-60 seconds to switch menus and focus with only minimal apps open. It even stutters when booting up with the standard XP jingle and takes 10 minutes to finish loading 'standard visable' apps and be ready to use. No sign of applications hogging processor time in task manager, but CPU usage mysteriously at 100% much of the time. It went from normal to this almost overnight, but has slowly got worse for 4 months before posting this… Fan comes on almost all the time, even when left unattended with cpu getting very hot, and little disk accesses made even when no apps other than O/S (the HD light comes on and off and a little head movement noise)

I run norton AV and personal firewall, but have occasionally disabled the f/w to get it to network with my desktop machine assuming my router f\w was on, and guess what, it wasnt! . This would have only happened a few times for about 30 mins at a time.

I also run spybot 1.4, but this isnt reporting anything strange…

Removing unused apps had no effect, deleting all unused apps from startup folder, no effect. Deleting files to give more spare HD space and de-fragging, no effect.

Im a firefox user.
