Hi there.

Beginning a few days ago, my computer has popped up numerous windows urging me to download spyware removal software and cleanse my system of dangerous viruses and worms. Upon startup, it now opens Internet Explorer windows and browses itself to websites that purport to sell downloads of anti-spyware products variously named “UltimateDefender,” “SpyShredderScanner,” “PCSecureSystem,” “YourPrivacyGuard,” “UltimateCleaner2007,” and others. I installed Spyware Doctor from PC Tools and at first it seemed to get rid of the problem. Now when I scan with Spyware Doctor, the only bug it finds is something called “Adware.Agent.BN.” SD removes the bug but whenever I start back up, I’m immediately reinfected with Adware.Agent.BN. My computer continues to open pop-ups and direct itself to these nefarious websites.

Whenever UltimateDefender, et al. is removed, my computer randomly closes Internet Explorer windows with no error messages or explanations. The browser window simply disappears. After some investigation, I’ve found that these occurrences coincide with a strange behavior exhibited by McAfee.

According to McAfee’s detection log, every 1 to 12 minutes, McAfee detects and removes the following trojans:

AdClicker-FC (Trojan), AdClicker-FC (Trojan)
Puper (Trojan), Puper (Trojan)
Puper (Trojan), Puper (Trojan)
Generic Component (Trojan)
Generic.f (Trojan), Generic.f (Trojan)
Generic Component (Trojan)

This sequence of detections and removals takes place in the span of about 10 seconds, and repeats over and over again until finally the “UltimateDefender” bug manifests itself again. Whenever it begins, any Internet Explorer window is automatically closed. However, IE seems to have no problems staying open once the pop-ups start and my computer begins browsing to these ridiculous websites.

This virus has rendered my machine all but useless. I’m not a technical person as far as computers are concerned, but I do rely heavily on it for work.

I hope someone on this forum is able to help out.

Thanks,

Dave

hi notesetter,

first we will use hjt, then get another download to run:

scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

i would remove this via the add/remove programs panel:
SpyHunter.exe
you have pc tools and avg.

the download:
Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/smitfraudfix.php

Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named: c:\rapport.txt

stop at this point and post a HijackThis log along with the contents of the c:\rapport.txt.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
——————————
after the above, reboot once and rescan and post anew hjt log and the smitfraud log please.

Thank you shelf life,

upon reboot, an error window with "SpyHunter" in the title bar says "Run-time error '429': ActiveX component can't create object"

Thanks again,

hi notesetter, ok good. time to run the second step of the smitfraud fix. we will do it in safe mode: copy/paste this part into notepad and save it somewhere so you can find it in safe mode: to reach safe mode you would tap the f8 key during a computer restart, chose the first option form the list:safe mode, log in to your usual account. ______________________________ in safe mode: Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool. Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter. The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter. A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode. The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive. post the log and a new hjt log please. shelf life
Okay,

Here are the logs of both actions performed in Safe Mode.

After cleaning the registry, I was never prompted to "Replace infected file?" The SmitFraudFix utility simply completed the registry clean and generated a log.

hi notesetter,

ok good, thanks for the info.

I was never prompted to "Replace infected file

you would have been only if it needed to be replaced.

do you know what this is?

C:\Program Files\Real\RealTime\IEBrowseHlp.dll

is that the streaming media player Real Player? if not, did you install something called Real?? BHO objects are suspect.
hows it looking on your end now??

First, let me thank you for your help. It's really nice to have my computer back again.

Real Time is just a tool that carries rss feeds and tickers. I don't really use it and I think I'll go ahead and uninstall it.

Things are much improved after the fixes you've suggested. There are no more pop ups and no more suspicious icons on my desktop. I do have a few questions though:

  • I can no longer display the quick launch toolbar on my taskbar. I get the message "cannot create toolbar."
  • Now that I'm running Spyware Doctor, my page file usage is up around 800 MB whereas before, I was only using around 300-400 MB. This is usually not a problem except when I need to use some resource hogging graphics/MIDI programs or gaming programs. Is it advisable to lock down my McAfee firewall and then disable Spyware Doctor in order to decrease my page file usage when necessary?
  • My system tray doesn't always display all the icons that I know should be there. This seems to be more or less random at startup with my volume control showing up some times and some times not. I don't know how long this has been happening, but it's been a while. Is this and adware/spyware problem or just a Windows problem? It's really just a minor annoyance.
Thanks again.
hi notesetter, ok good. glad to help. real player is a resource hog also, for sure– if you dont use it –uninstall it via add/remove programs panel quick time also if you dont really use it. your questions: 1)This symptom can occur if you do not have a Quick Launch folder. If this is the problem you can resolve it by using Windows Explorer to create a folder named "Quick Launch" (without the quotes) at the following location: C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer to create the folder:File>new>folder if you cant see application data, do this to show all folders: FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok 2) i think spysweeper has a real time protection component that runs in the backgroud. you might try disabling it when you are using a resource hog. here it is: this may be kind of old, you should poke around the spysweeper FAQ to be sure: 1. Open Spysweeper and click on Options > Program Options and uncheck "load at windows startup". 2. On the left click "shields" and then uncheck everything there. 3. Uncheck "home page shield". 4. Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification". 5. Exit the program. 3) dont think its a malware problem. more windows. i have the same thing happen on a laptop, mostly its the little charge battery icon that may or may not show up at bootup, even though its checked to show?? not much help on that one. shelf life
Hi again. I got rid of Real Time. Everything seems to be running fine now. Thanks for the help. I'll try the Quick Launch fix you suggested. Do you think all is well, or do you need another log? Really thankful for this forum. It has inspired me to volunteer my talents and know-how to an online open music encyclopedia (since i'd be no help with people's computer problems). Thanks again for the help.
hi notesetter,

ok good. your hjt log looks ok. one thing: both those anti-malware apps you have: AVG and spysweeper. both have real time protection components that run in the background. i would disable one of them and only have one running in the background. two can cause conflicts and chew up resources. the "guard' as its called in avg is only active for 30 days unless you buy a license key for it. after the 30 days its disabled and wont function. if your copy of avg is over 30 days and you havent purchased a key dont worry about the "guard" because its not active. you still can update and scan with avg though after the 30 days.

i think you are good to go. we can make new restore points just to make sure no stuff got archived in them.

One of the features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is agood idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot

Hello again, Okay, I created the folder "Quick Launch" in the specified location. Now, the menu item in "Quick Launch" is checked when I right-click on the task bar and select "Toolbars", but there are no icons there to launch anything quickly. Do I need to select the icons I want on the Quick Launch toolbar in a different area of Windows? I also deleted the old restore points. Everything looks pretty good. Thanks.
Shelf Life, I figured out the quick launch thing. You have to right-click the taskbar in the area where there are usually icons. This brings up the quick launch folder. You then create shortcut icons for the programs you you want to have displayed on the quick launch toolbar. ;) Thanks.
