[Resolved] Help stop hijacking of Yahoo searches

I would appreciate you help eliminating this issue. The symptom in IE is that I do a search in Yahoo, click on a link, and it takes me to a different search engine instead of the expected site; I go back to the search results and try again, and it goes to yet another search engine. The third attempt finally yields the expected results.

I've run ATF Cleaner as suggested.

Spybot found and (apparently) removed Zlob.DNSchanger.

AVG identified Heuristic.Win32.Dialer and quarantined it.

OS & Office patches are up to date except for the most recent batch.

We only recently switched from Norton Internet Security to Trend Micro.

Logs from AVG and HJT follow. Please advise.

TIA

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Sorry for the delay in getting to your post.

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
I believe you still have a Wareout infection. Spybot does "try" to clean it but is not usually successful.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new HijackThis log.
Thank you for your help, Dave. I don't think the Fixwareout.exe did anything. I downloaded (tried both sites), Next, Install, "Run fixit" checked, and Finish; it gave a message that it would need to reboot. i pressed the space bar, and it came up with: C:\fixwareout\FindT\dumphive.exe Files missing… in Notepad. I waited in case it was running in the backgrouund, but nothing happened. Also saw no sign of it in Task manager, and no request to reboot. Didn't see much need to run HijackThis without this doing what it should! Please advise…
Let's get a deep scan with Kaspersky online virus scanner.

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * Click 'Accept' in the window that pops up.
* You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click on the information bar and select Install ActiveX Control if so. This may happen more than once. That is OK. You also may get a warning from your Windows Firewall. You can tell it to unblock.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save Report As…' button:
* Make sure it says Save as a text file - change it if not
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Thanks again for your efforts. Hmmm  Not much to speak of there. Just some temp files and a restore point. Those aren't going to cause your issues. Are you still getting the redirects? I assume so. I am really still thinking this is a Wareout infection as you show all the signs and from what Spybot had found and tried to fix. Can you try removing your current Fixwareout that you ran earlier and downloading a new one. Give it another shot and let me know. In the meantime I'll do a little more research.
Sorry to say, symptom continues. Deleted Fixwareout.exe from desktop and the C:\FixWareOut folder, and downloaded fresh, but still gives symptom of missing "dumphive.exe" file. (Just to test it, I downloaded it to another PC and it worked fine. I then tried to copy the C:\FixWareOut folder to the common server so I could grab the dumphive.exe file, but it would not allow me to copy dumphive.exe. Maybe you have a trick to get past this… :wall:
Well I don't have any "tricks" to get around this but I have consulted with the experts in the forum here and have one suggestion to try at this point. I will keep researching in case this does not work either.

Please disable any real time protection from your security programs. In your case that would be Trend Micro, AVG AS, Spybot, ect… Then try running the Fixwareout again. Make sure you disconnect from the internet while doing this as you will be leaving your computer wide open for other nasties. Re-enable all the protection before hooking back up.

Also, while I don't see any signs of Smitfraud in your HJT log let's run a quick check any way.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

What did you download exactly? Whatever you did it worked. Looks like FixWareout did it's thing.

Another file of interest has been brought to my attention also.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdfmgr.exe

Pretty sure it's bad but let's upload it to double check.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org, click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdfmgr.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

It was a bit of a shotgun, but i figured "what the heck". I deleted Fixwareout.exe and the directory from this PC, downloaded it on another PC and transferred it across our network, but still didn't install it. I used Add/Remove to uninstall Spybot and AVG, then I did a safe boot (no network) so I could be SURE nothing got in the way, and started Fixwareout.exe per your original instructions, letting it start the fix. It needed to reboot this time like it was supposed. I let it reboot without interrupting, so the reboot was NOT a safe boot. If it did the trick, GREAT! Here's the result from the virusscan: Scan taken on 22 Oct 2007 23:44:22 (GMT) A-Squared Found nothing AntiVir Found nothing ArcaVir Found Heur.W32 Avast Found nothing AVG Antivirus Found nothing BitDefender Found nothing ClamAV Found nothing CPsecure Found nothing Dr.Web Found nothing F-Prot Antivirus Found nothing F-Secure Anti-Virus Found nothing Fortinet Found nothing Kaspersky Anti-Virus Found nothing NOD32 Found nothing Norman Virus Control Found nothing Panda Antivirus Found nothing Rising Antivirus Found nothing Sophos Antivirus Found nothing VirusBuster Found nothing VBA32 Found nothing Any more, oh wise one? Wow, you must be a true hacker at heart. I didn't mean to have you uninstall those security apps…just turn off real time protection. But whatever you did worked…Nice work. Upon further review I believe that file I had you upload is part of your Trend Micro package. So I think we're OK there. Post a fresh HJT and let me know how it's running, hopefully the redirects have stopped.
Hacker at heart? Yeah, I probably AM. (BS in Computer Science back in the 1970s, just before PC's took over the world!) But I've gone over to the dark side, mostly doing accounting, tax work, and computer training. I do try to maintain our in-house network and help clients when I can, though.

(Actually, I knew I was going to uninstall those apps when we were done, so that just seemed an appropriate time to do it!)

You are right about the redirects going away. I guess I was too excited about the Fixwareout working that i forgot to say something in my post. (Boy, I DO need to get a life!)

Anyway, here's the latest HJT log. Hopefully, it's a clean bill of health!

Great, looks good. Just need to update Java when you get a chance.

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 3.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
————————————-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider some or all of the following:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Spybot: Search And Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Use IESpy-Ad -

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.
