I have been running at 100% CPU usage for a couple days now, not quite sure what's causing the problem. Any help would be appreciated!
Hi jsimek01 and welcome to the forums.

Sorry for the delay in getting to your post, things are really busy in here as you can probably see.

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

We Now Need To Boot Into Safemode Now

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine,
amount of memory, hard drives installed etc (BOOT SCREEEN).
At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

Run AVG

  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button This must done before saving the report
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
      [external image: Posted Image]
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
  • Now copy the report back to this topic.

Restart into normal mode and post the AVG Log and a new HJT Log. Also how are things now
Sorry it's taken me so long to respond I have been trying to get through all the scanning, etc. Unfortunately, I am still having issues with the CPU usage. It appears to get better if I have my computer off for a long time, and it will go away for about 10 minutes, but then sure enough it comes right back on with the 100% usage. Also, it took the AVG scan about 4 hours to complete even in Safemode, and I also did a virus scan in normal mode that took about 5 hours to do. I took all the steps you instructed me too and unfortunately I still have issues. Here is my new HJT and AVG log taken. Thanks again for all your help! Being a student certainly sucks in this case.

Oh! I almost forgot, I couldn't locate ErrorGuard.exe in program files or anywhere. I did a file search and still couldn't find it although I removed it using HJT like you instructed me to.

Thanks so much!
Also, I noticed that during System Idle today the usage seems to hover between 15-25% while I am doing nothing. Then, once I start to open Firefox or Word processing, etc. It shoots up to 100% or at least above 75%. Just figured it may help to know exactly what is going on.
What process(es) are using the CPU cycles? You should be able to see this through Task Manager, on the processes tab, look under CPU for the number. System idle at 15-25 while doing nothing is an definite issue. System idle should be at over 90 most of the time when you aren't doing something, that would be normal. Again, where is it being used?
Oops! I got them mixed up sorry! I meant that CPU Usage itself on the main screen for performance runs at 15-25% pretty much all the time before shooting up to 100% after I've been on my computer for a little while. system idle tends to be over 75% CPU pretty much all the time. Lately I noticed RTVscan and svchost were the culprits of the most cpu usage according to the processes list, although it is not all the time.
Well it doesn't appear to be anything malicious that's causing the issue. It is likely either a conflict or software corruption of some kind. Both the processes you mentioned obviously need to be running. But not like that. RTVscan is part of Symantec AV. What I would do myself and recommend is to disable items not needed with msconfig to troubleshoot it. You can pretty much disable anything but the essentials like your AV, and other system processes. You have quite a bit running at startup and there may be a conflict with some of them. Sorry I don't have something more concrete to go on but it does not appear to be a malware related issue. Let me know how you make out or if you have any other questions.
