Before we "go to great lengths" to kill Vundo "the hard way", let's try a slightly different approach.... :wtf:

Please download/unzip this:

Registry Search by Bobbi Flekman

<Double-click> on regsearch.exe, and search for this:

WinAntiVirusPro

It may take a while to run, so be patient. When finished, the search results will appear in your text editor,

Paste the contents of the results into your next post.

:)

Copy and paste the contents of the quote box below into notepad.

Save it as file name: fixme.reg , and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"NI.UWA6P_0001_N68M2301"=-

Then, locate fixme.reg on your desktop and <double-click> it.

You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".

Answer 'Yes' and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Run Internet Explorer.

At the top of IE, Click:

Tools --> Internet Options --> Delete files

Check the "Delete all offline content" box.

Then click "OK" then the other "OK".

Close IE.

Now go back to my original post, and do everything starting with the LAST:

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

If it doesn't kill Vundo this time, we have no alternative but to do it "the hard way".
:)

Micah - sorry - I've been out on a business trip and just had a chance to follow up on this today. I finally was able to get this computuer to run in safe mode and executed hijackthis and vundofix a few times in safe mode. I ended up deleting one or two norton dll's (not sure I should have done that). Vundofix shows that I still have 2 vundo files that it won't remove: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vtstu.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\utstv.ini Any ideas on this? Micah - sorry - I've been out on a business trip

"Real life" comes 1st.

Vundo is still there. :(

I just helped someone kill vundo "the hard way" here:

Click Me

So, if you want, you can peek at that to see what process you'll need to prepare for.

It's a little "complicated", but (as far as I know) there's no other way to safely remove this if Vundofix.exe doesn't work.

DON'T START THIS "FIX" UNTIL YOU CAN LEAVE THE MACHINE ON UNTIL WE ARE DONE.

THE FILES THAT NEED REMOVED WILL MULTIPLY OR CHANGE WITH EACH REBOOT.

Run HijackThis!

Click the "Open the Misc Tools section" Button.

Click the "Open process manager" Button.

Check the "Show DLL's" box (upper right).

In the upper window, click on each running process, then look in the lower window.

Find and post the name of each process using C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtstu.dll

Post back, letting me know ALL the processes using that DLL.

Then I need this:

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

l2mfix.exe (© Shadowwar)

l2mfix.exe (© Shadowwar)

Save the file to your desktop and <double-click> l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

<double-click> l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing <enter>.

This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log. Copy/paste the contents of that log into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder!

With all this info, I can prepare the "fix".

I'm at work at the moment, but will check back at about 11:30 CDT

After you supply this info, I'll prepare the "fix" and make a post.

Then after you run the "fix", your system should be "clean", so it shouldn't be much longer.

:)

Step 1:

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from:

Process Explorer

Also download/unzip KillBox by Option^Explicit from:

Killbox.zip

Step 2:

Download this file and save it where you can find it:

FixVundo Registry File

Copy/paste the text in the Quote box below into Notepad, and save it where you can find it, and save it as "killme.txt"

C:\WINDOWS\System32\vtstu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\utstv.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\System32\utstv.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\System32\utstv.tmp

Step 3:

Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of:

vtstu.dll

once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of:

vtstu.dlll

under winlogon click OK.

If you see any of the files listed below, kill them as well.

Files to look for:
--------------------------
utstv.ini2
utstv.bak2
utstv.tmp

BE SURE TO KILL ONLY THESE FILES!!!

Probably not all of them will be present. That is OK.

Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of:

vtstu.dll

then click the kill button.

If you see any of the files listed below kill them as well.

Files to look for:
--------------------------
utstv.ini2
utstv.bak2
utstv.tmp

BE SURE TO KILL ONLY THESE FILES!!!

Probably not all of them will be present. That is OK

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run Hijack This! and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: ATLDistrib Object - {2353FCBC-012D-487B-8BF3-865C0929FBEB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtstu.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtstu - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtstu.dll

Now click Fix checked and close HijackThis.

Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.

Step 4:

Find and open the "killme.txt" file with Notepad.

Then copy the all file names in the "killme.txt" to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing <Ctrl>C (hold the <Ctrl> key down, then press C):

Close "killme.txt".

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the Delete on reboot button.

In Killbox, click File (in the upper left of Killbox), and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

After the reboot, "copy/paste" a new Hijack This! log file into this thread. :)

Micah, See log below. I'm not sure if Killbox worked because it did not initiate a reboot -after I clicked the red dot, yes and ok --- the system did not automatically reboot --- I had to reboot it. Also - as you can see the 02 and 020 entries are still there. Let me know what you think ---- Thanks.
