Infected and at a loss.

I have been working for roughly two days now trying to "remove" whatever it is that has infected my computer. It all started with a game download from a known gaming site (I've already written to them); which is the only thing that I can recollect as I do not use other programs any longer and besides it was Prison Tycoon 3 Demo. Yeah, I'm cheesy! It looked cool in the store. =(.

So, let me explain to you what's been happening. Perhaps there's something deeper that I'm unaware of (which I apparently am).

It started by getting access violations and how "setup.exe" could not function or something. Anyhow, whatever this is was trying to open consistently programs that I don't even have installed anymore. Perhaps trace amounts of things I did have, id est: LimeWire and another one I can't quite remember that Java picked up as an error. Unfortunately, I don't have the report it showed because I thought that the three programs that were running virus/malware cleaners/checkers would pick up on the problem eventually. Well, it did. Picked up on over 4300 infections. I used "Spyware Doctor" in conjunction with a program directly from Microsoft called "Windows Live OneCare" and scanned with "Windows Defender" which was the first one to notice immediately (but too late) after installation of the demo failed. It didn't even seem like a legit demo download after that point.

From then on, I started noticing and reading up on things like Alcan? And Rbot and PS_Desktop_Hijack amongst a carp**-ton more. And of course, I'm savvy with certain things, but not with the guts of the thing.

Anyhow, after I installed Windows Live OneCare (as I ran it from Microsoft in Safe Mode originally and installed in normal) it asked me to reboot. Naturally, I shrugged and said that it must be okay now considering I wasn't getting any errors like before, though Spyware Doctor was "preventing" malicious software from accessing explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe. So, I restarted.

It got worse. OneCare would not open (failed operation as I didn't have access priviledges it claims) and prior to that I immediately got the "Windows Explorer encountered and error ---- and I sent error report. Then, OneCare said that it needed to close? And again, another error window. Between these two instances the desktop would disappear for roughly 10 seconds. The third time, however, when I tried to use a tray icon - I received another Windows Explorer error and the desktop completely disappeared. At this time, the only program that was running was Spyware Doctor which was in the middle of a scan process. It was continuing but nothing else was accessible nor seen.

But! I don't know what to do and I'm tired and scared and all of the other things associated with these woes. If you can help, please do, I would be grateful as I'm at a loss and I'm currently working in safe mode because that's the only thing it's allowing me to do. Do I have to run Hijackthis in normal mode for it to "see" the problems? If so, I can repost one here after confirmation, that is, if I'm allowed to access my desktop again.
