[Resolved] Windows using over 24GB hard drive space

I don't know if this belongs in here or not but you guys helped once before with great success.
Problem:

Friend's computer running pretty well but there is a low disk space error. Research shows only 300mb space left on a 37.9GB hard drive. The Windows folder is 24GB large with a lot of blue folders with names such as: $NtUninstallKB885835_0$ Don't know if these can be deleted or not. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to What The Tech. Sorry if there was a delay, it's a busy forum.

Please either print or copy this post to a program like Notepad because you wont have Internet access in Safe Mode.

Download: CCleaner (freeware)

Run the installer, and uncheck the option to install Yahoo toolbar (unless you want Yahoo toolbar).
Once installed, run CCleaner click the Windows
The following should be selected by default, if not, please select:

Next: click Options click the Settings tab
Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.", click Ok
Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then Exit

Download, install, and update AVG 7.5 anti-spyware
  • Load AVG 7.5 and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Close AVG 7.5. Do not run it yet.
Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 a few times before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.
  • In Safe Mode, load AVG 7.5 and click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • AVG 7.5 will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG 7.5 will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Now please boot back into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis(HJT) log.

Thanks for the response.

While I was away my friend downloaded and installed mcafee. I uninstalled it then ran through your directions. AVG did not give me the option to save the report but it found 64 medium risk adware and it cleaned them. It was hard using AVG in safe mode because of a screen size issue. Anyway here is the HJT log. Right now 391 MB are free on the hard drive.

Hi,
Thanks for the response. I did all that you posted. The computer is and was working fine except for the space on the harddrive. The windows folder is now 25GB, there is only 351mb free on the 40 GB hard drive. I compared to my laptop running windows XP and the windows folder is only about 4GB on my laptop. There just seems to be too much stuff in the windows folder.
