Hi Ive had others, with more experience and knowledge than myself looking over this topic. I have bad news for you… Virut is a file infector which infects every exe present on your system. The problem with Virut is, this is a buggy file infector and that's why scanners cannot disinfect them properly either > result > files are corrupted, won't work anymore. And as I already explained, Virut infects every exe. This means that you may not delete these files, but they should be disinfected. And since it's a buggy virus, the files cannot be properly disinfected. This unfortunately means that this is a game over situation and there's nothing much you can do besides formatting and reinstalling Windows. Don't backup your files either, because when you backup exe files, they are also infected. You can however backup pictures and documents. Virut is spread via crack and keygen sites.

Hi Scotty, That is a bit grim, but is also the outcome I expected. Let me get this straight: If I preserve an exe infected with virut.q, such as an installer for a program, reinstall windows, and then run that installer, my computer would become reinfected?

Hi Unfortunately, Virut can infect inside those folders. iso's I presume, are not exe files so should be fine. Virut is new to me, and it was thanks I asked for help that I learned how serious this was. It's a real nasty one. Any idea where you picked it up from?

It's the most suspicious looking thing in the world. I don't really know what I was thinkin'. As I mentioned previously, the irony is I was cracking a game i already had. I'd be wearing a wry smile if I was actually engaging in some piracy, but I just feel like a twit for not having the patience to dig the CD key out from my junk.

I think the file may have been replaced or something though, cos I can't get it to replicate what happened when I ran it the first time around. Neither zip triggered anything when uploaded to virustotal.

I'm impressed by this fella's destructive potential. I was wiped out by sircam before, but that was back when I was a neophyte of the computer world. These days I figured I could handle pretty much anything with the power of google. such was not the case.
