First I explain my situation. I recieved a series of trojans a few weeks ago due to visiting an anime site that wasn't legit.. I clicked on page and bam, a bunch of stuff was forcely installed to my computer. A rogue anti-virus program WinAntiVirus2007 was installed along with them. I've experienced fake AV programs before and I didn't use it. I was able to remove it… Several other apps began springing from these trojans. I was able to remove the trojans, but something is up. Something my AV program keeps overlooking. I use Register Cleaner to check my registry and it's always finding problems(it is legit)always removing the same errors. They come back when I reboot.

IE still works but its been hijacked. It'll flood my computer with popups. I countered this by keeping it in a state of "work offline". Netscape can't be used at all. It'll load and then shutdown. Internet Explorer will even launch itself, periodically.

I'm using firefox now and it too is showing signs of being taking over. Also with every click I make, the process size will increase by 1000KB. In a couple of minutes, firefox will have well over 100,000KB in the task manager. My page file gets unbelievably high(300+). Before I had these problems, it'd never exceed 195MB. I'm at a loss.

This is my hijackthis log.

Hi! Welcome to the WTT forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Rename HijackThis
There is a possibility an infection which is hiding part of the HijackThis log because it's called hijackthis.exe.
Please rename hijackthis.exe to hello.exe by right-clicking on the Desktop icon and selecting Rename.

Now scan again and post a new log, please.
When I click on save list, there is no prompt.. If it's even saving at all, I don't know where it's at. Another problem I'm having with my computer. Things do not work right.

I'll rename hijackthis right now.

Hi

If it saved the uninstall list it would be in the C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis. If not, no matter for now.

Download and Run ComboFix
  • Download this file from below:

    Here
  • Disconnect from the Internet, than disable your anti-virus and any real-time anti-spyware monitors that are running.
  • Then double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2:Remember to re-enable your anti-virus and anti-spyware before reconnecting to the Internet.
Strange… I could have sworm WinAV was taken care of..guess it came back.

Combofix log.

To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
  • After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
  • Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
  • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
  • It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
  • Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
Click close and close again to exit the program.
Please paste that information here for me with a new HijackThis log.

And tell me how everything is working now?
Sorry for the long wait. I'm actually glad I did not delete my FFXI folder even though I don't play it anymore. For a trojan was found there. It seems that Registry Cleaner was part of the problem. . . . I feel like a fool, since its the retail version. The box was not checked but it was detected. I had SAS remove it from my computer.

Status.. Firefox loads up much faster now. My desktop didnt hang for like a minute. IE didnt launch itself upon PC startup. I have not been getting random WinAV popups in firefox. My pagefile is still high but Im going to assume thats because the bug associated with the 8000(8800) series card. I was against Firefox before, but now Im believer that its much safer to use.

No. It was made by sammsoft. I've had it for about 2 years. My last PC crashed a burned, and I bought a new one and got this problem, I looked up my key again and redownloaded. Why?
Hi

Im just surprised that SAS targetted it, unless it had been infected. As far as I can see, it's a safe product, and SAS didnt touch the folder in Program Files. You might want to see if the setup.exe file is still in that folder and perhaps repair the installation. I would need to find out more, but there is a review here at techrepublic which rates the program highly.

Mind you, the heading says registry Cleaner Trial. Did you try it first, then install?

Anyhoo, delete the Combofix icon from your Desktop, then navigate to and delete these folders, if they are present,

C:\Combofix
C:\Qoobox

As you already have Adaware installed and monitoring your computer, there is no need to continue with SuperAntiSpyware, which can be removed through Add/Remove Programs, or you could disable it's monitor and use it as an extra on-demand scanner.

This is my usual speech for when you are clean, which you appear to be.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Disable and Enable System Restore.

It's also a good idea to Flush your System Restore points after ridding yourself of malware:
  • Click Start | Help and Support | Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close the Help and Support Center box.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Here are some free programs, I recommend.

Install Spyware Guard
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Guard here

Install SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Make sure your Windows is ALWAYS up to date!

An unpatched Windows is vulnerable and even with the "best" Antivirus and Firewall installed, malware will find its way through.
So visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to download and install the latest updates.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
Yes I tried it first then bought the retail and installed. It's all good, I can just redownload it again if necessary. :) Thanks for your time, it is much appreciated.
