realw,

Welcome to the forum. It looks like you have some nasty stuff going on :(

Lets do a few things. I am going to give you 3 scans to run, I need to see the report of all the scans.

C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe <–Go here and right click on the HJT Icon, (looks like a red stick of dynamite with a plunger) and rename it to Scanner.exe.

Download VundoFix to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

You possibly two major infections, I don't mean to overwhelm you so take your time and run the scans in order and when your done, post the report for each along with a new HJT log with it renamed please
Hi Ken, thanks for getting back to me.

While I was waiting I went to the Self-Help section and followed those instructions. My computer appears to be clear but I would appreciate it if you could check this HiJackThis log (I can also run other scans and log them such as AVGAS, if necessary):

These two are left over and are part of Smitfraud.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

I suggest you run option 1 for smiffraud and let me see the log.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\videostartup.exe
This file is suspicious, do you have any idea if you use it or not?? The only hits I am getting on it is your log and a place in Russia, thats not a good sign.

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Then upload this file for analysis , it will give you a report, post it please.
Go to Jotti Upload and under the browse feature, browse to this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\videostartup.exe

Then click on upload and it will give you a report, post the report in your next reply.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 2 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Let me see the Smitfraud log, the log from Jotti and a new HJT log please
Ken, thanks for the advice. Here is the SmitFraud report after running option 1:

Right now I will update my Java as you suggested. Let me know where things stand with the latest logs. Thanks!!!

Will
Ken, I thought I had figured out how to install the latest Java but I cannot get the verify installation to work. I've checked everything Sun suggests in terms of IE configuration, Java console, etc. Can you think of any reason why it would not work? Should I just deinstall and reinstall? Will
Ken, I ran CCleaner, then ran a new HJT log, here it is:

It looks like your Java installed correctly, but you still are infected with Smitfraud.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.

Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

  • Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart into normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:

Reboot normally.

  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
  • Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Post the log from Smitfraud fix, the AVG Spyware log and a New HJT log please
Hi Ken, sorry to be so long getting back to this–it is on my home computer

I followed the steps and all went fine except for one thing: when the AVG scan finished and I applied the actions, there was no report to save, even though the settings for reports had been done correctly. So I took a screen shot of the Scan window hoping it is better than nothing.

The AVG screen shot is attached.

One mistake I might have made is that I did all of this under my personal account (which is admin) rather than the system administrator account. It is possible that when I first installed AVG, I was logged in as the administrator. Should I have been logged in as administrator for all of this?

Thanks Ken

Will
Not to worry about the AVG log, I don't know if the new version changed the format but I haven't had one single poster post the log in the past month or so. Your log looks fine  How are things running now??
Ken, good to know the log looks good now! The computer seems fine. I have a few questions: 1. I have all this anti-spyware stuff on my computer now. Some of it has live checking, like SpyBot. Is that the one I should use? Also does Spybot (and/or the other programs) work across user accounts? (that is, would whoever is logged in to the computer get the same alerts from the program?) 2. I have never quite understood how the IE Options settings for security and privacy work vs. any security software (like CA Internet Security Suite, which I have). They both seem to have settings for some of the same things. Does one override the other? Is it ok to have both of them trying to do the same things? 3. Do you have any recommendations about whether my CA program is sufficient (in combination with SpyBot and others) to protect me? 4. What cookie settings does one need to have some security but also some convenience? It seems like when the security settings are high, some websites do not work. It is annoying to have to keep going back to change settings. I'd like to find a way to set them and leave them, and use some program to scan them periodically to get rid of anything unnecessary. Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it!! Will
Hello Will,

Once you install a program and it installs on your C:\Program Files folder anyone can access it.

You can open IE and go to Tools > Security and just keep all the default settings, as far as cookies, you can set them a little lower if you wish , go to the Privacy tab and have it set for medium.

The basic rules for installing Anti Virus and Anti Spyware programs are that you should never have more than one Anti Virus program, more will cause you some problems. The same goes for a Firewall, only one software firewall is recommended, but if you for example install a router with a built in firewall thats ok to have one software and one hardware firewall. CA is a decent program that comes with a firewall so I would keep that.

Spybot is one of the better programs to run about once a week or so , I am going to give you some links to tips and free tools to install to help keep you more secure.

Set Spybot Search and Destroy up this way. Open up Spybot and go to Help> About and make sure you have version 1.5
Download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.1
If you have the older version 1.4, remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

  • During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
  • Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
  • Then to Updates Search for Updates
  • If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
  • Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
  • Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
  • Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
  • Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
  • Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
  • Let it scan your system
  • Then to Fix Problems and fix all it finds.
  • Reboot your computer.

You can also run this free cleaner , I run it on my systems about once aweek. It will clean out all the temp files and such that tend to clog up your system .

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Malware Complaints
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

Here are some free programs to install, these are must haves to help keep you secure
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give
you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads
(cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and
painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
