Hi,
I am trying to fix a relatives dell inspiron e1505 notebook, they have been running it without antivirus. I just put AVG on it and the only issues I seem to be still getting are the Smitfraud-c.CoreService and Virtumonde problems that won't be repaired by Spybot. One other issue is a wireless configuration box that opens on startup stating incorrect mfc dll versions installed on the system, I assume this can be fixed by running XP disc. Regarding the Smitfraud and Virtumonde I ran a hijack this and post results below. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi nickmod

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Thanks,

jpshortstuff

Hi nickmod

Log looks good

You can now delete ComboFix.exe, VundoFix.exe and the C:\Qoobox folder.

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.
Hide protected/system files:
Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Now that you're clean, theres just a few steps I'd like you to take to prevent any future infections.
  • Use Mozilla Firefox or Opera as your internet browser.
These are more secure than Internet Explorer and can be downloaded for free from here:
    Download Mozilla FireFox
    Download Opera

  • Make sure your update your Anti-Virus software regularly, new viruses are being developed all the time.

  • If you don't have these programs, or any similar ones, i recommend you download and install these:
SpywareGuard detects any changes to Internet Explorer settings BEFORE they happen, and gives you the option to change them or keep the old ones.
SpywareBlaster is another real-time scanner that prevents most spyware from even being installed.
You can get them for free from here:
    Download SpywareGuard
    Download SpywareBlaster

I recommend getting both these programs, together they will stop a large amount of Spyware.

  • Some more programs that it would be useful to have:
Download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 from here
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
Download Ad-Aware 2007 SE Personal 7.1.06 from here
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

  • System restore:
Clean and create new system restore point regularly.
How do I clean my system restore and create new system restore point?
    Here are the instructions!
Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein: So How Did I Get Infected In First Place
