I have a computer running Windows XP home and it's got something on it that I just can't get rid of. The problem is that as soon as network connectivity is established IE7 launches ad sites all over the screen. If Firefox is running the same happens. I've scanned with Spy Sweeper 5.5 and Microworld eScan (Kaspersky engine) and although a lot of stuff has been pulled off, this problem won't go away despite both applications reporting the computer is clean. I've run CWS Shredder, I've scanned in safe mode (the windows are busy popping open in safe mode also) and I've even removed the drive and installed it in another computer as the non system disk and run the scans from both applications. Any suggestions (other than some nitro <for the drive> and valium <for me>) ?

Phil58,

Welcome to the forum. Really can't help you until I see a Hijckthis log.

Download and install Trendmicros Hijackthis

Download the Trendmicro Hijackthis Installer, follow defauts and it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis and this is exactly where we want it to be.
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Before you post your HJT log, do this, its very important.
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe<-- Right click on Hijackthis.exe ( looks like a man with a spyglass )and rename it to Scanner.exe
