Hit OK. You will not see much happen. This is normal.
There will now be a file in the root ("C") c:/ controlset.txt open that file and copy the contents of that file for me in your next reply.
it came up ok when i restarted but quickly went back to the same old screwed resolution.
after a few restarts, and shut downs, i was prompted to change the resolution which i did and had to reset all my resolution settings manually.
in addition, i cant rename some of my files…i think this is a minor problem but i'm not sure. i was always warned that renaming it wld change the content. although i can still open it after that, its format would change to "file" regardless of wat it was before (eg: excel or wma) >< sorry for the trouble!
Scroll to windows firewall.
If it's stareted click stop.
Set the startup type to disabled.
Click OK
Now we wont have to worry about it and you can install your other firewall.

Renaming files.
As a default setting you do not see extetions for known applications. (examples .exe .doc and so forth). Set like this you do not need to add extensions. If you can see the extentions of those files when you rename them you must include the correct extension for that file. If you change the extension to something different this is when windows usually warns you.
You should simply be able to right click choose rename and type in the new name for the file.
Lets test it:
Create a new txt document on your desktop.
right click on the desktop and choose new /text doument. A new .txt document will appear on the desktop.
Right click that file and choose rename. If you can see the extension.(TXT) That needs to be included in the new name or windows will not recognize it.
Let me know if you can see the extentions or not. That's an easy fix.
i only have a box named internet connection firewall, and if i check the box, it would be to "protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the internet" and nothing related to windows firewall as you have described.

So you would uncheck that box if it wasn't already then install your firewall.
Do that and post a HJT log .
Let me know how things seem to be running.
