When I press ctrl alt delete and sort processes by CPU usage, "SYSTEM" is at 97-100%, everything else is 00. My computer runs slow when it is like this, like it is trying to load something. I thought it only happened when I start firefox, but now it seems to happen randomly. I have to hardboot my computer to make it stop. The only things I have installed recently are an updated version of Symantec Security which I have to have in order to be on the network for my college, and an update for iTunes and Firefox.

Here is my hijackthis report:

Please note that tech team does not analyze HJT Logs here in OCP.
If you wish additional assistance with a HJT Log, please post into Malware Removal Forum for Expert assistance.

Moving right along with some assistance we can provide…..

In my "unqualified" opinion, your HJT Log does not indicate any malware infection.
But it does indicate that you have many "unnecessary" applications and processes running from StartUp.
Could that be enough to cause the episodic 100% CPU usage (SYSTEM) ?
Yes!
__________

Please Run the PCPitstop Full Tests, here:
http://www.pcpitstop.com
Register and create a password
Accept the ActiveX component to allow your machine to run the Full Tests
Registering and accepting the ActiveX are both SAFE and FREE.
Full Tests is the first item in the left hand column of that page.

The Full Tests take about 2-3 minutes for most machines.
Once you have your Results, please post the TechExpress Link back here into this thread for review.
TechExpress is the last item on the list in the yellow box in upper right area of any Results page.
Post the entire URL link information.

We'll then be better able to give you useful recommendations

I asked a HJT Expert to look in on your Log.
The Expert confirmed - no malware evident.

Additionally, this particular Expert is also very familiar with Norton Products and has spotted a "probable cause" of your specific difficulty.

I will post the Experts entire comment and recommendation following this post.

Please consider following that Experts recommendations.
Please also Run and Post the TechExpress of your PCPitstop Full Tests for additional assistance.

Best Regards

No signs of malware, but no logs from scans drive me to my next thought.
I think it's the newest version of Norton, I checked and this applies to 2006 and 2007, and if it is it's an easy fix.

When I updated mine I ran into a problem when after LiveUpdate would run the CPU was in high use.
I researched and found that it is written into the program to do a quick scan after the daily updates have been automatically downloaded.
It's called quick scan and it can be eliminated….But you also have to tell the user to remember to do routine scans after this is disabled.

Open Norton Protection Center (right click and select open)
Click on Norton AntiVirus tab at top
Expand "Settings" and scroll down to bottom for Additional Options -> Virus and Spyware Protection Options
On the left-hand side of the screen that pops up, click on General Settings under Manual Scanning
Uncheck the second item, which should be "Scan active programs and start-up files" <–this I did not do.
Again, on the left-hand side, click on General Settings under LiveUpdate
Uncheck the second box there, too. It should be "Run quick scan whenever protection updates have been received"

Click OK/Apply exit.

To do a check to see if it works…..

Open Nortons…..Located on the left side on the Program, Click on the Run LiveUpdate button

This will connect tot he Symantec site and check for updates, if any are found it will prompt you to download….
Follow prompts….and that really should be it.
