Hi. I was going to uninstall some games tonight and saw a program called adssite browser optimizer. My bad guy alarm went off at once. Checked Google and, sure enough, it's a baddy. I also ran a new program last week called a squared and it said I had a trojan, but when I quarantined it my keyboard quit on me. Gzmrotate.dll was part of it I think. From what I read in their forums I believed it to be a false positive. Maybe not.

Anyway, here my HJT log. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi tadpole1954 and welcome to the forums.

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • NOTE:Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

No, this is not a false positive. It is Adssite Adware.

Go to Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the following if present.
Click Start > Control Panel > Double Click Add or Remove Programs:

Adssite Browser Optimizer (or anything relating to it)

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [adstart] "C:\WINDOWS\System32\Rundll32.exe" "C:\WINDOWS\system32\gzmrotate.dll" DllVerify

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select "Delete on Reboot".
Place the following line (complete path) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gzmrotate.dll

Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Post a fresh HJT log and let me know how it's running now.
Hello Dave and thanks for taking the time to help me. I uninstalled Adssite, then ran HJT and there was no registry entry for O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [adstart] "C:\WINDOWS\System32\Rundll32.exe" "C:\WINDOWS\system32\gzmrotate.dll" DllVerify. So I went ahead and ran Killbox and restarted the computer. So far everything looks a-ok. I think we can consider this problem solved. Thanks again.
Woops!! I neglected to post the Hijack This file. Sorry. Here it is………

Hi,

Yes, the uninstaller probably took care of the 04 in your HJT log. Just wanted to make sure though.

I would also recommend that you update and run full scans with both your Antivirus and Antispyware programs. Letting them fix whatever they find.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
