Hello, I seem to have a really clunky system - i have seen this before and was told it maybe a virus, there seem to conflicts, furthermore - I did a trnd housecall scan and Avira PE classic came up with TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen as an unwanted program. any help on how I can stop this seemingly cyclical behaviour, appreciated. Hi forticalcitron_x,

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

————————————————————————

It appears that you have two antivirus programs running - Antivir and AVG Antivirus (AVG Antispyware is not an antivirus program). Running one antivirus program is essential, but having two can cause conflicts, slow your system down and even cause stability problems without improving your security. You should use just one antivirus program and if you want an "2nd opinion", use an online scanner like Kaspersky's.

If you have two antivirus programs installed, then before proceeding, please remove one of them.
Please make sure you choose one currently capable of receiving updates, because an antivirus program without updates cannot protect your system effectively. If you have any problems, please stop and let me know.

Then download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
————————————————————————

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager… button, then press Save list…
Save the Uninstall log to your Desktop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the SDFix report, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.
first of all, thanks very much Silver. see lists requested below. i am only running the email scanner component of AVG anti-virus as Avira free doesn't have this. is there another way - I want to keep avira as its good for what it is. I also downloaded 6 critical updates from microsoft that I'd missed. I don't know if this makes a difference. one of them was an OLE fix and there was a another remote access fix. OLE seems to be relevent as I have often had applications run others through OLE, legitimately or otherwie (?) Hi forticalcitron_x,

Any emails arriving will be scanned by Antivir's real-time protection in the same way as any other file being accessed will be. It does not however act in the same way as AVG's and certify incoming and outgoing mails, but the end result is very similar. If you like AVG's email scanner then uninstall Antivir and turn on the AVG real-time protection. If the email scanner isn't required then remove whichever one you choose. Keeping both installed will decrease system performance and is likely to cause conflicts, while not improving your security.

You have Spyware Terminator installed. This was until recently listed as a rogue/suspect antispyware application, due to it's tainted history and the fact that there are superior and free products available, I strongly recommend you remove it via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs

Also, your Java is out of date and is now a security risk. Please remove this program via Add/Remove Programs:
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6
You can get the latest update (version 6 update 2) from here

Next:
Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c dir /a /s c:\winbo32.exe >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A black box and a file on your Desktop called look.txt. Please wait until the black box closes before opening look.txt. Post the contents of look.txt in your next response.

Then, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Once complete, please post the look.txt output, the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
okay, will do Silver. I have the free version of Avira personal edition classic - it says it doesn't offer email protection, but you say it treats them like any other file?.. okay.

Hi forticalcitron_x,

I have the free version of Avira personal edition classic - it says it doesn't offer email protection, but you say it treats them like any other file?.. okay.

Yes, when emails are downloaded to an email client (Like Outlook or The Bat!), the email is stored as a file which should be scanned by your antivirus program. This is not the same as the email protection provided by AVG but it still results in emails being scanned. This however doesn't mean you should click on attachments or links in emails unless they are expected and you are 100% sure.

The reports look pretty good, how is your machine running now?
well okay, thanks Silver, the machine seems to be running alot more smoothly now. I'll give it 24 hours running in and then post as resolved.
Hi forticalcitron_x,

That sounds good, and it looks like your machine is clean of malware :)

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You have plenty of protection software installed however please ensure it is kept up to date. Check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update themselves daily, and that your firewall is the latest version.

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins orActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
okay. I usually use Opera browser, and then Firefox for a few other things. any anti-spyware or other security application recommendations for these browsers.? I also have a static IP - is this any impediment to my using a custom hosts file. ideally I would like to use a proxy but haven't figured out how to do this with my ISP and Opera, yet. EDIT: I'm still getting a slight problem where it says error contacting remote server on quite a few pages I try to load up. you know the error message you get when a page doesn't load or doesn't exist…well that, until I refresh each time. it seems to happen on firefox more if I have both firefox and opera open.
Hi forticalcitron_x,

The most important software applies regardless of browser is real-time antivirus, real-time antispyware and firewall - all of which you have covered if you use the paid-for version of AVG Antispyware. If you do not, then you should choose another antispyware program with real-time features such as Windows Defender.

A custom hosts file works with any browser and it doesn't matter if you have a static IP or not. If you disable your DNS service as per the tutorial then you won't even know it's installed and working, except for the ads that don't show up sometimes :) I recommend you try it out.

WinPatrol is a good addition to any setup. It gives you control over startup programs and other areas without using a lot of system resources. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Having good software installed and keeping your OS patched are crucial to avoid infection, however software cannot protect you from everything so safe surfing and taking care to only run trusted programs are important practices also.

Regarding your browsing issues, I don't think it's malware-related so I recommend you post in the Other computer problems forum here at WhatTheTech to get help.

If you have any further questions or issues please let me know.
