[Resolved] Slow, And Odd Stuff Happening.....

Hello
This is my second time around. Computer slow in general. Desktop files occasionally apparantly open themselves. Couple of times a window has come up saying that there's a Flash movie running and using up resources. Ctrl-Alt-Del does not show such a thing running, and takes 20 clicks to shut that window. Must be an alien!

I'll also be looking to shorten the boot-up time, which is nearly 10 minutes. Think I'm going to start not running the computer 24/7. Save a tree or something. [Save a few bucks!]

Ran the two spywares, and here is the HiJackThis log:

Thanks!

denno,

Welcome to the forum, sorry for the delay in responding. Can't read your HJT log the way you posted it, do it this way and I will be glad to take a look at it for you.
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked <– Make sure you do this
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Thanks….let's see if this is right………..

C:\Program Files\Timer Wizard <– Is this a program that you use??

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.
If you use this and know it to be safe than leave it be

The rest of your log looks fine, no malware or a virus that I can see.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

The issues you are having appear to be windows and not malware related and this forum is for malware removal only, I suggest you post here in our
Other Computer Problems forum.

Hi Ken
I do use Timer Wizard once in a dog's age….sets up a reminder to pop up.
I don't know what the Activex printer thing is. Certainly not the name of a program I am aware of on my computer.
Could it be the name of some function I wouldn't know anything about but performs some useful action, or does it look like some kind of unwanted bug? Any idea?

Thank you for the extensive list of resources….I'll go through them. And thanks for fast work.

Something else I am curious about. I'm sure What The Tech can always use more people just to try and keep up with the spread of malware. Not sure whether I have the savvy or the time, but I am curious about the training process…how big and hairy is it, what does it take to learn how to help people properly?

Thanks again,
Denno
Denno,

Any 016 entry on your log can be safely removed , you will just be prompted to download it again the next time you visit the site, so the ones your unsure of you can remove and the ones you know you use and know to be safe can be left alone.

I have been at this for almost 4 years, used to build computers and and otherthings but I find the security side of it more interesting. This forum offers a classroom, it does take some commitment to work the logs. I work them whenever I have a spare minute at work and home. You can apply here if you like. They will start you out with some reading and then do practice logs , then you can advance to work Live Logs but have to have your fix checked before you post to the user. Malware is getting more sophisticated all the time, in the days of win95 kids wrote viruses that would make your monitor flicker and they thought it was funny but now its being written by thieves, mostly off shore that want to steal anything from you they can.

Read this and apply if you wish.

Okey-doke. That's good. Thanks for all the info.
I see by your website it's all right to say "molto grazzi" to you. (That, and "mozzarella" and "mackarole" comprises my Italian vocabulary. I started in Brooklyn but grew up in the old melting pot, So. Cal. My Dad, however, refreshed his boyhood Italian or Sicilian and went visiting in the '70s and '80s a couple times. First time for anyone he knew of since his folks emigrated around the turn of the [last] century, but the relatives treated him as returning family. Must've been pretty great).
