Hello all. New user here, so please be gentle.

I'm having a bit of a problem with my PC lately. Ever since my 16 year old cousin used my computer for about 2 weeks while visiting, I've been noticing that when using Internet Explorer, I'm getting popups for other sites (Adware sites like DriveCleaner, etc). I had created her her own user account on the PC, with base user rights (not Admin or Power User rights). But somehow, I think something still got on. I did a scan with Avast Antivirus (current updates), as well as Ad-Aware 2007, and I was able to detect and remove a couple Adware and Trojans, such as Conhook-BS, Agent-JNX and Virtumonde-DF. I have since rescanned multiple times with both Avast and Ad-Aware, and it says everything is clean. However, I'm still getting Adware popups when using Internet Explorer (but not when using Firefox). Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks in advance!!

Here is my log:

Thanks for the response. Maybe this is a Newb question, but… When I go to the site you referenced, and click on the link to download OiUninstaller.exe, my Avast Antivirus pops up a warning saying that the download contains a sample of Win32:Adware-GEN, and blocks the download. Is this normal? Should I tell it to ignore it and continue to download?
MrC, On top of the question I mentioned above, the links on that page for Combofix are no longer valid. Both links return a Page Not Found. Any suggestions? Thanks! kmichalec
MrC,

I followed the instructions in the above mentioned link:

1. Ran ATF
2. Ran ComboFix
3. Ran AVG-AS
4. Ran SAS

Next I ran, AVG-AS. Unfortunately, I checked the settings to create a log file, but apparently, since I didn't quit the program and restart it before the Scan, it didn't create a Log. However, in the results, were a bunch of Tracking Cookies, and 1 Adware.Agent. It deleted the Tracking cookies, and it Quarantined the following:

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B87FBCB5-45BA-434D-9B95-8F44721C4F64}\RP615\A0067078.dll
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B87FBCB5-45BA-434D-9B95-8F44721C4F64}\RP611\A0067002.dll
C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\xmlhelper4.dll.vir

Question on this. If ATF was supposed to delete all cookied, history, temp information, etc, how come there were still tracking cookies present by the time AVG-AS ran? Shouldn't they have been deleted when ATF was run? Just curious.

Next, I ran SAS. Here is the log:

Sorry, MR C. I was adding the other logs, as you were typing the reply. I wasn't sure how much I could paste into a reply, so I did them separate. A few more questions: I currently run Avast Antivirus, and while I was running Combofix, and it was doing it's thing, I got a three warning messages from Avast saying: Sign of "Win32:Dadobra-EY [Trj]" has been found in "C:\ComboFix\Cfiles.cf" file. (all 3 the same) I clicked ignore all 3 times. Is this normal? Also, I routinely run AdAware 2007, with Avast, yet neither one of these picked up that I had anything on my PC, like Combofix and AVG-AS seemed to. Does that mean that maybe I should consider using something else, such as AVG-AS? Would you recommend as a protection suite? Also, what is the difference between AVG-AS and SAS? Should they both catch the same things (if AVG-AS hadn't already caught them, then SAS would have?)? Just wondering if I can continue to use SAS and that be enough, or if I should consider purchasing AVG-AS? Again, thanks so much for your help so far! Sorry about all the questions, but I'm trying to educate myself on all of this. I think I just blindly assumed Avast and AdAware were doing thier job before, but now I know a little better. Let me know if you need me to run anything else!
Remember to update your Java it's way behind:
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04

———————-

I'll answer all your questions ASAP…lets get the log clean for now.

—————-

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

* Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
* Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
* Don't run it yet

——————

Close ALL programs down, leaving ONLY HijackThis running - Click Scan and…..
Place a check against the following items if found:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: c:\windows\system32\pmkhfcd.dll

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Back to the Avenger.

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it, then right click on it and choose Copy [or by pressing (Ctrl+C)]:

Files to delete:
c:\windows\system32\pmkhfcd.dll

Registry values to replace with dummy:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows | AppInit_DLLs

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

* Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
* Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
* Right click in the new window and choose Paste or use (Ctrl+V). This will paste the text from the clipboard into the new window.
* Click Done
* Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
* Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:

* It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
* On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
* After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
* The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

Post a fresh HJT log and the avenger.txt, MrC
Thanks, MrC.

I assume the fact that Avenger said nothing was deleted was because we deleted it in the first HJT step where you had me check the box and remove the file, correct? (just trying to keep up!)

Let me know what you think!

I assume the fact that Avenger said nothing was deleted was because we deleted it in the first HJT step where you had me check the box and remove the file, correct? (just trying to keep up!)

I actually made a mistake by having you "fix" that 020 entry, usually you will get an error message when you try to fix an 020 AppInit_DLLs using HJT …..that's why we use the Avenger. It couldn't delete the file (pmkhfcd.dll) because it doesn't exist on your system, but we cleared out the registry entry so we're OK.

The log looks OK now….how's it running, MrC
MrC, It appears to running ok now. I normally use Firefox for my day to day web browsing, but I do have to use IE for certain things (work VPN), and I haven't been getting any more popups since we ran all these steps. Thank you so very much! I really do appreciate your help! Now that everything is working ok, do you have any thoughts on some of the other questions I posed in my other posts. I really want to keep the system clean (of course, not letting my 16 year old cousin use it would be a good start, as I think that's where this came from, as it all started after she used it, and she was using IE for the two weeks she was visiting). Any suggestions on which programs to use and/or not bother using (if they don't protect well enough) would be definitely appreciated! Thanks again! kmichalec

I currently run Avast Antivirus, and while I was running Combofix, and it was doing it's thing, I got a three warning messages from Avast saying:
Sign of "Win32:Dadobra-EY [Trj]" has been found in "C:\ComboFix\Cfiles.cf" file. (all 3 the same) I clicked ignore all 3 times. Is this normal?

Yes that's one of the files it creates and is OK

Also, I routinely run AdAware 2007, with Avast, yet neither one of these picked up that I had anything on my PC, like Combofix and AVG-AS seemed to. Does that mean that maybe I should consider using something else, such as AVG-AS? Would you recommend as a protection suite?

ComboFix is a tool and doesn't provide any protection.
AVG-AS and SAS are the 2 main anti-malware cleaners used today and can provide "real time" protection….no one tool finds it all…that's why we use multiple programs.
I use AVG-free as my anti-virus and you should also has some real-time protection from malware as AVG-AS or SAS. (Avast is OK…but I like AVG-free)
There's other programs you should have…you can see them in "My Preventive Maintenance" below.

Also, what is the difference between AVG-AS and SAS? Should they both catch the same things (if AVG-AS hadn't already caught them, then SAS would have?)? Just wondering if I can continue to use SAS and that be enough, or if I should consider purchasing AVG-AS?

AVG-AS and SAS are scanners for malware and can provide real-time protection, the difference between them….I really couldn't tell you…they both do the same thing but in their own way.
I would purchase one and keep the other for use as a scanner, no one program gets it all.

If you have any questions - please post back

I'll leave you with……..

Some Preventive Maintenance:

Some of the programs you may have run create backups of what was deleted - you can safely delete them now: (delete folders in blue) You can also delete/uninstall the programs themselves.

C:\!KillBox (KillBox)
C:\VundoFix Backups (VundoFix)
C:\QooBox (ComboFix)
C:\SDFix\backups\backups.zip (SDFix)
C:\avenger\backup.zip (Avenger)

If you used AVG Anti-Spyware and/or SuperAntiSpyware………..

Open up SuperAntiSpyware > Preferences > General and Start-up > Start-up Options > Uncheck > Start SAS when Windows Starts.
"SAS free" provides no real time protection so there's no need for it to be running, I suggest you keep the program and update regularly - you can use it to scan for malware. It's an excellent program. When you want to start it - just double click on the SAS icon.

AVG Anti-Spyware will provide 30 days of real time protection and then after that you can use it to scan for malware - you'll have to manually update it first.

Don't open e-mail attachments without first scanning them with an up-to-date anti virus program, even after doing that I would be very careful. Don't click on any executables in e-mails or any other links that you're not sure of.
Don't believe e-mails from your bank, financial institution, etc asking for personal informations - they're most likely fraudulent no matter how authentic they look.
Watch your surfing habits, don't click on or download anything you're not sure of. Don't install a program that hasn't been recommended by a reputable organization.
