[Resolved] Hjt Log/wininit.exe Trojan/virus?

I was checking my processes on my laptop (Windows Vista) when I noticed that wininit.exe was running, and when I looked it up in ProcessLibrary.com it said it was a trojan/virus.

So I ran some scans and nothing was picked up. When I ran a system scan through Command it showed:

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 99% complete.Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files
but wa
s unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

I tried to open CBS Log and Access was Denied.

I set a system restore, ran another scan, and came up with the same thing.

Hi, I'm not seeing anything malicious in the HJT log and it certainly sounds like a file corruption. You can try this. To open the entire cbs.log, try right-clicking on Notepad, and then choose Run as Administrator. Then use File > Open to navigate to the log. Since the log may be huge (it's used by other programs besides the SFC), you might want to do this: To create relevant SFC-only information gleaned from the cbs.log, and put it in a small file called sfcdetails.txt, right-click Command Prompt (using the shortcut in Start Menu\Programs\Accessories) and choose Run as Administrator. By default, the prompt starts in C:\Users\(Your Name). Type: cd desktop Press Enter on your keyboard. Then Copy and Paste this at the prompt: findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt Press Enter. Sfcdetails.txt should then appear on your Desktop. Looking at entries for the latest date in that text file , what files are noted as being problematic?

Hello. I tried to open it in Notepad, but when I opened the CBS folder, nothing was there. When doing as you said in Command Prompt, it came out as: FINDSTR: Cannot open C:\Windows\logs\cbs\CBS.log I opened the document on my desktop, and it was empty. Also when I was monitoring Task Manager, when I open up Internet Explorer, it shows up twice, which I don't think is normal. One process is ieuser.exe And the other is iexplore.exe

Hi,

Okay, I'm not quite sure why that won't open. But let's deal with the potential virus/trojan issue with wininit first.

BTW…on ieuser.exe:
The file is located in the folder C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\. If you start Internet Explorer, it will first launches IEUser.exe, which sets the security settings of the Internet Explorer to the medium level. When the Internet Explorer requires administrative privileges (e.g. install an ActiveX), the Admin Broker IEInstall.exe is used (which runs at high integrity). So I think that's Okay.


But if you did see wininit.exe, that's not Okay. Obviously not seeing it your HJT log. Let's run a Kaspersky scan. This should run on Vista, I have run it on my Vista machine without issues.

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * Click 'Accept' in the window that pops up.
* You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click on the information bar and select Install ActiveX Control if so. This may happen more than once. That is OK. You also may get a warning from your Windows Firewall. You can tell it to unblock.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save Report As…' button:
* Make sure it says Save as a text file - change it if not
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi,

Well, Kaspersky was squeaky clean, nothing there.

Question…some services showed up from sysinternals that were not there earlier. I am certainly familiar with sysinternals (now M$ I guess), but I don't recognize and can't find anything on those services/files. What are they and did you put them there?

System_Spyware_Interrogator - Never used it, although it appears to be quite legitimate.

Your HJT log appears to be all clean, and Kaspersky was clean, so I'm not thinking there is anything Malware related going on here now. I do have one other warning, on Napster.

Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur. Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice could be the source of future malware infestation. I don't remember using Sysinternals, but I looked it up, and it's an application from microsoft.com. I must have been trying to use it to find out what was wrong with my laptop. The iPod Service must be from iTunes or something. But I don't use my ipod on my laptop anymore so I'll remove it. Thanks for the help, I'm glad there's nothing wrong with my laptop. ^_^

Oops…I should not have included that 023 for the Ipod. My bad. If you truly don't want it anymore the best way to remove it is to uninstall the software with Add or Remove Programs. That will get everything.
