Hello,

I have a problem with "Think-Adz". I got it by downloading a mislabelled file.

Here's what I have done to try to fix it:
Delete programs from control panel
Use search function from start menu
Spyware removers - twice! Using Spysweeper, Adaware, and Pest Patrol
Both times I still got popups from Think-Adz, (and also got some popups that may or may not be related to Think-Adz)
So I tried one last time, with some new spyware removers - so my last sweep I did Spysweeper, Adaware, Pest Patrol, Spybot, and SUPERantispyware, rebooted, then did hijack this and am posting right now.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your time. Here is my Hijackthis log

Hello shifu and welcome to the SpywareSupport Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

A. You are currently running HijackThis from a Temporary Folder and from inside a zipped file but are dangerous locations to run the program for they will not permit backups to be made in one instance and in the other, the backups will probably be deleted by the tools we use.

1. Right click in an empty space on your desktop.

2. From the Menu, click New, then Folder and a folder will appear on your desktop.

3. Name the folder HJT

4. Extract the tool from the zipped file in which it currently resides into the new Folder that was just created.

B. Please download this file - combofix.exe by sUBs
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.
Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Regards,

Trevuren

A. You have a password stealing trojan on your machine. I HIGHLY recommend that you change all your passwords and alert your banks and all financial institutions, if you use this computer for financial transactions. Do this from another computer!!!!!. You may want to consider totally formating your machine and doing a complete reinstall. That is the best way to ensure that all these trojans are totally gone. I am pretty confident that we can clean up your system but those are your options. I will proceed with my fix in case you choose to not format.

B. I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

1. Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. In Add or Remove Programs, Remove the Viewpoint component
4. Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

C. While you are at it, the following two programs should be uninstalled from your system:

NoAdware5.0
SpySpotter

Justification for their removal can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/uninstall/all.html

D. Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi Trevuren I originally posted the things you asked for, but decided that I don't want to take any chances. How do you reformat the computer (xp) and save old files? I have some programs and a lot of documents I want to save. What would be the best way to go about this? Saving onto CDs? Is there any way to save certain softwares that I no longer have the installation CDs for? And after I reformat, is it safe to change my passwords from this same computer? Thanks a lot. shifu

I originally posted the things you asked for, but decided that I don't want to take any chances.

The trojan in question is now gone from your system but it still may have left you vulnerable. I agree with your choice of action.

How do you reformat the computer (xp) and save old files?

You back up as little as possible, even data. No blanket backups because there could be traces of malware in certain Windows folders.

Here is a site that may provide you with some valuable info: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

Is there any way to save certain softwares that I no longer have the installation CDs for

No, unfortunately.

And after I reformat, is it safe to change my passwords from this same computer?

Yes
Hi Trevuren

I reformatted my computer and it's been a few days, but I just want to make sure there's nothing wrong with it.

you also recommended that I change passwords - do I have to change the usernames as well?

shifu
Everything looks just fine.

do I have to change the usernames as well?

Unless you change all your passwords to exceptionally long, randomly generated passwords, I would not give them the windows of opportunity to use any bit of information that may be in their possession. Passwords should be changed on a regular basis but watch out you may forget them.

A lot of individuals use a little program called "KeyPass" to store these passwords. This small tool also has a built-in random password generator which is quite handy and you can customize the passwords to the difficulty of your choice. Google the name and "ye shall find"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Trevuren
