A workmate of mine recently asked me to help her with a computer problem, and, in a moment of weakness, I agreed to see what I could do. It seems her teenage daugther had been surfing and downloading stuff in a shameless manner, without any virus protection whatsoever. Suddenly the computer started to slow down, and finally crawled to a standstill.
I've taken her box home, but it's really, really slow -- way too slow for the specs. I happened to have some anti-spyware programs saved to disk, and was able to install and run Spybot Search and Destroy (it was at that point impossibly slow to download from the net). After a four-hour scan, Spybot found, among other things:
PSW.LDPinch IE
Rootkit.Dayoff.Process (!!!!) (Sweet mother of God, I honestly didn't believe in such things until I saw them with my own eyes.)
Smitfraud - C.
I'm quite sure there's more as well.
Here's the HT log:

Because I suspect IE is hijacked as well, I've installed Opera, so that I can now at least download stuff from the net.
I'm going to get to work now and try to eliminate Smitfraud (following the instructions in the self-help section above). Any and all help, advice, or suggestions with the rest of this gratefully accepted.
Pursuant to the instructions on removing Smitfraud, I'm also going to post this report, the result of running SmitfraudFix:

Despite several attempts at installing and reinstalling AVG, I've not been able to access it or run the update suggested for step one in the self-help how-to.
However, since posting last I noticed that a single process (qt.task.exe) was hogging 99% of the CPU usage. So I ran msconfig and unchecked under the autostart tab, and restarted the computer for a very significant performance boost.
