Hi,

A friend suggested that I come on here for help. I have a Windows XP machine (HP Pavillion dv5000). It shuts down without warning lately, especially after I use a browser. I really don't know how to do much of anything with computers, but he said he would start by using this forum.

I have run Hijack This and the log is posted below. I would appreciate anyone's help troubleshooting this problem.

Thanks,
jwildsp

Welcome to Tom Coyote. Although nothing of outright infection seems to be showing here I am not familiar with that Browster software running there, and actually curious as to why the download links listed on it at McAfee's Site Advisor look like they are dead end links. Post back what you know about this software, and let's do the following scan as well.

Go Here and download Silent Runners to your desktop. Run it, and post back here the log it creates. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back here.
