Hello I recently ran PC Doctor with the heuristics tab ticked and it found one more trojan - trojan.pws.tanspy. It has cleaned and deleted. No apparent system problems prior to finding this and everything still appears fine, for about a week now. should I still be worried? Have already cleaned up video activex access using smitfraudfix about two weeks ago. Many thanks HR
Dave, Thanks for you reply. I won't be able to post a HJ file until saturday or sunday. Hope this thread can continue till then. Some background - I recently posted a HJ file which another forum member couldn't spot a problem with. Until Saturday, is there any advice you can give? Obviously am concerned about passwords and bank security so am being ultra cautious at the mo. on that one. Are there any other signs i can look out for of possible infection or malware being secretly installed on my machine? Thanks, HR
That is fine, I'll keep the thread alive. Post whenever you get a chance. I looked over your last thread with LDTate (who happens to be one of the most knowledgeable helpers/teachers in these forums {{hope you're watching LDT… :wavey: }}, and I didn't see anything malicious either. But post again because things can change. As far as signs go, you will usually see a significant slow down in performance, pop-ups, high CPU usage, ect…but not always. What makes you suspect your still infected?
Thanks Dave, new HJT log files posted below.

In response to your question why do I suspect i am still infected? the reason is because the trojan.pws.tanspy was found by spyware doctor after my computer had been cleaned of the original smitfraud virus, at least two weeks later in fact. it could have been a residue from the original infection, (since I didn't install spyware doctor for about two weeks afterwards as well) but nevertheless I am still a bit jumpy about the whole thing and particularly worried that there is some sort of hidden exploit that allows a hacker to circumvent my firewall and download whatever they want, e.g. keyloggers and password stealers. My AVG anti-virus and free version of anti spyware didn't spot anything at all, even though they were installed all the way through.

Since the original infection was nabbed, my computer seems to be operating very well with no noticeable slow downs or pop-ups or anything. The only ongoing problem i seem to have is that my level of spam e-mail has increased and worringly, some of this now occassionally comes with with suspicious attachments (never had that before i was infected) and quite often my own name is given as the sender, as if i am being specifically targeted…?

Latest run of spyware doctor today didn't show up anything I was particularly worried about, one tracking cookie and 27 hidden files that are apparently part of the computer back-up system, according to web forums.

Anyway, you peeps are absolute lifesavers/godsend/angels, am very thankful you are able to help me out.

Your further thoughts would be appreciated, maybe I am being a bit paranoid? Certainly I am ultra cautious about what i browse and download now.

Thanks,

HR (living in fear of the boogeyman hacker)

Hi,

Not seeing anything malicious in your HJT log. Doesn't mean nothing is there though. As far as increasing spam activity…it's possible that is related to a malware infection but more likely would be someone got hold of your email directly in some way. Possibly given by you to someone you thought you could trust? Another way is that they get harvested off sites where they are displayed. I have contact email addresses on some web sites I run and the bots harvest them so I get all kinds of spam and infected attachments to those addresses. There are so many ways this can happen. Let's run a Kaspersky scan and see if anything turns up.

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
New posts, as above,

To my relief it appears kaspersky scan didn't find anything. Here is the log file anyway and along with HJT log for your expert interpretation.

thanks, will await to hear.

Hi HR, Ya, HJT log still looks clean. Kaspersky was squeaky clean and it's one of the most thorough scannners there are. Other than spam are you seeing any other signs of infection? If not then I would give you the "all clear". Dave
Not seeing anything else unusual at the moment, so that looks pretty positive. If I hadn't actually seen the threats appear i would chide myself for hypochondria, nevertheless with so much at stake these day (credit, bank details etc) then it pays to be very sure indeed. thanks very much again, absolute godsend. just out of interest, how does one join and train up to become an forum supervisor/adviser. does it take a long time? HR.
Hi, Glad to hear things are running well. Yes, you can really never be too cautious about Malware issues these days. In my signature is a link to the MRU school for learning about this. There is also a school here and the 2 forums work closely together. With the recent change over here to the new name, ect… I cannot find the link to the school here. Perhaps if you look around a bit you can find it. Good luck and hope to see you in the forums. Regards, Dave
