Hi, and thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

For about the last week, my internet connection (AT&T Broadband) stops working after approximately an hour and a half to two hours. Whenever it stops working, my task manager shows that spool.exe is taking up most of the my computer's memory. While I'm connected to the internet, spool.exe is in the task manager, but taking up no memory. I've done numerous sweeps with Spy Sweeper to no avail. Here is my HijackThis log:

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


You need To disable SpySweeper, it can stop our fix.
SpySweeper

To disable SpySweeper Shields

• Open SpySweeper.
• Click Shield Settings on the right
  (or Shields on the left, depending what screen you're on).
• Click Internet Explorer and uncheck all items.
• Click Windows System and uncheck all items.
• Click Hosts File and uncheck all items.
• Click Startup Programs and uncheck all items.
• Close SpySweeper.After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Note:
(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)


It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:

• Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
• The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
• It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).

Please set up the program as follows:

• Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now
  change to inactive.
• Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
• Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
• Click on the Settings tab.
• Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
• Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
• Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
• Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
• Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.

Close all open windows.
Do not run a scan yet.

Reboot your computer into SafeMode
You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.


IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

• Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
• Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
  then click on "Complete System Scan".
• ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
  time.
• Let the program scan your computer.
• When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:[list]
• Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
• Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
• When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
• Then click the Save Scan Report button.
• Click the Save Report as button.
• Save the report to your Desktop.
• Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
• Reboot in normal mode and copy the report back to this topic along with a new HijackThis log.

W32/Tilebot-S is a network worm with backdoor Trojan functionality for the Windows platform.

W32/Tilebot-S spreads to network shares with weak passwords as a result of the backdoor Trojan element receiving the appropriate command from a remote user.

This sort of infection cannot be trusted, simply because the tools available to us cannot guarantee it will have been totally cleaned. The only way to be sure is to completely reformat and rebuild the system.

With AVG Anti-Spyware, if you click on the Infections icon, then it will show you all the items in Quarrantine and you can remove them that way. Just click Select All then Remove Finally


Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find (DLLHOST32) Windows Host Services
Right click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service
Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type"
in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK.

I'm not sure what has changed on my computer since the last HJT that would cause those things to be missing.

Anyway, my computer is still behaving like it was originally. I'll be connected to the internet for an hour and a half to two hours, and suddenly I'll be disconnected. It's quite a hassle, as I rely on my computer for work and I'm in the middle of a big project right now. Having to reboot my computer every two hours or so to get the internet to work is quite inconvenient and time consuming. Like I said above, eventually when I have the time, I'll reformat my computer (I've done this a few times in the past as my computer is a little on the old side). Right now, however, I do not have the time to spare to go through that process.

Let me know how I should proceed, or if you really think that it is hopeless. Thanks again for all your help.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


You need to update SunJava.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.

• Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2
  The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

• Click the "Download" button to the right.

• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".

• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.

• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.

• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the icon next to it.

• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

• Then from your desktop double-click on 6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Once installed you can test to see that it is in fact installed
