I started noticing that the hourglass icon was flashing next to the arrow icon for a second at regular intervals when I wasn't really doing anything to cause this. Then Norton Anti-Virus found "Infostealer" which I see is a virus. I am not noticing any other slow-downs or bad behavior, but I don't want my info stolen. Would Infostealer show up in the log?

Here is my HJT log:

Howdy randwill, No infection showing here. What did Norton identify as that infection (file and location)? Also I noticed your issues with downloading HijackThis - likely have Javascript blocked in some manner as the download requires that to work right.

I ran the Trend Micro System Cleaner and now Norton doesn't find anything. It really spooked me because Norton runs the system scan weekly and never finds anything, and then suddenly I see the Infostealer reference. Would an incorrect setting of Javascript prevent HJT from downloading from here but not from the other site that I ended up getting it from? Thanks for taking the time to check my log. I, and a lot of other people, appreciate the service that you experts give us.

Yes, that click on that page uses javascript to complete the download process. If you set your security to medium if it is not that might help. Internet Explorer>Tools>Internet Options>Security Tab>"Internet">Custom Level>Under "ActiveX controls and Plugins" Verify the following: Download signed ActiveX controls = Prompt Download unsigned ActiveX controls = Disabled Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe = Disabled Run ActiveX controls and Plugins = Enabled Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting = Enabled Also: Under "Scripting" Verify the following: Active Scripting = Enabled

Thanks. Yep, all that stuff matches your suggestions exactly. But when I go to:

http://www.tomcoyote.org/hijackthis

and click on the "Download HijackThis", the first box is labeled "File Download - Security Warning" and asks "Do you want to save this file?" Below this it reads:
Name: HJTsetup
Type: Unknown File Type, 476 KB
From: www.tomcoyote.org

I click "Save".

I get the "Save As" box. The file name reads "HJT setup" and the "Save as type" reads "Document".

I click "Save". (To desktop)

In less than a second the generic Windows document icon appears on the desktop and is named "HJTsetup". This icon does nothing as I indicated in the earlier thread.

I'm not having problems downloading other stuff but this little issue would seem to indicate I've got something wrong or something set wrong.

You can either right click the one you already downloaded, select "Rename" and add ".exe" to it (to make it an executable) or do a new download but this time save it as type "All Files".

Saving it as type "All files" had no effect, but adding ".exe" after the name caused the icon to immediately change to the disc/box/monitor style and clicking on it launched the application. I've never seen this behaviour with an executable before so I'm glad to have learned something today. Still don't know why, but thanks for helping me out.
