Hi MoValMike and welcome to the forums.
My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

You are yet another victim of the lovely Vundo infection. Let us begin here:

Please download
VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click Yes
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Hi MoValMike,

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CF46BFB3-2ACC-441b-B82B-36B9562C7FF1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\kpkgytec.dll

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

I need you to rename Hijackthis because I suspect Vundo may still be hiding here:
  • Please go to the folder where you saved Hijackthis.exe:
  • Right-click on it, then select Rename.
  • Name it something like: FindVundo.exe (or whatever you want)
  • Then double-click the renamed HJT to scan and then post the new logfile.

Looking good, how's it running? Some updating to do, a little cleanup, and an online virus scan.

STEP 1:

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.

STEP 2:

Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files,
cookies, cache, ect...

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

STEP 3:

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

First, it is running 1000 percent better. I so much appreciate all the time and help you have been giving us. I did all the things you suggested and now I've included the Kaspersky scan and a new log file.

Glad to hear things are running better!

Kaspersky obviously turned up some "stray" items we need to deal with. So let's get to it.

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\Mary\Local Settings\Temp\poolsv.exe
    C:\ej.exe
    C:\Program Files\poolsv
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\buyaypet.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\foferybg.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\gtwmuogq.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\gueigcfx.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\iromyuun.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kbmweyih.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nqvvhymq.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rarnqbum.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp100.tmp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp12.tmp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp24.tmp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp34.tmp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp4B.tmp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp6F.tmp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmpB.tmp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmpF.tmp.dll

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
*If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately, you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine, choose Yes.
**If a reboot was necessary or you needed to Exit before posting the log, you will find a copy of the log at the root of the drive where OTMoveIt is installed, usually at :
C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\********_******.log
(where "********_******" is the "date_time")

Click "Exit" to close OTMoveIt.

You can also delete the Vundo tool, which will remove the infected backed up files.

In my last post I will advise to clear out the restore points that are infected and set a fresh one. Just want to make sure all is well first.

Post another HJT log to make sure nothing else has popped up and hopefully we are done.
Good job!

Looks good!

The OTMoveIt worked like you said. I was just wondering where the files were moved to and why. Did it delete the bad ones? Just curious.

All files/folders that are moved are placed in a folder named _OTMoveIt\MovedFiles at the root of the drive that OTMoveIt is being run from (eg if you placed OTMoveIT on your Desktop and that is on the C:\ drive then the folder will be at C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles). They will be deleted when you remove the OT Move It tool. Which you can do now.

You can also now remove the Vundo tool. You can keep ATF Cleaner and use it regularly for cleanup if you like. It is my tool of choice for this. Use can also use Windows cleanup and there are other tools such as CC Cleaner.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 2 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scannersweekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Dave

Hi Mike and Mary,

I'm glad we were able to help (special emphasis on the we). Although I was the one helping "up front" here credit should go to all who have helped and coached me along the way, particularly the teachers who give of their time in these forums.
