Description:
I only have troubles when opening my web browser. Everyonce and a while it will open a new page advertising various pages and sometimes trying to get me to buy winantiviruspro. I know it is a scam so I went and did all I could to get rid of winantiviruspro (and errorsafe). Spybot S&D found both of them and said it removed them but I still see random ads.
Firefox has WAY less pop ups when browsing, then when I try to browse in IE.

It likes to attack when I click on a link and pretend that the link I clicked on leads to one of their sites.

Anyway, if you need more info let me know. I might not be able to respond for a little while, but will get back.

Thank-you in advance.
Hi Jameo and welcome to the forums.

I need you to rename Hijackthis because I suspect that you may have the Vundo infection that can hide some entries in your log.
  • Please go to the folder where you saved Hijackthis.exe:
  • Right-click on it, then select Rename.
  • Name it something like: FindVundo.exe (or whatever you want)
  • Then double-click the renamed HJT to scan and then post the new logfile.

new log from findvundo.exe

didn't realize virus' were that sneaky.
Oh yes the Vundo Trojan is quite "sneaky" and sometimes very stubborn to remove.

Please download
VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click Yes
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.

You sure wern't joking when you said vundo was stubborn to get rid of!!

EDIT::

Okay so after seeing that new files were popping up I ran VundoFix.exe about 3 more times. Reboot, scan, delete, reboot, scan, delete etc.

I was able to remove MORE files until VundoFix.exe could no longer find anymore.

NOW, here is my problem.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {857A461D-8D96-4996-A4A0-AEA0A2535B86} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtrpnn.dll

is still on my log (posted below), and after googleing it i found out that it is infact a virus.

LOG QUOTE FROM ANOTHER COMPUTER:
awtrpnn.dll;C:\WINDOWS\system32;Trojan.Virtumod;Will be cured after reboot.;
END QUOTE

So i am guessing that it is the next file to try and remove.

ASWELL, I found a very interesting report on my Mcafee logs (ATTACHED). I couldn't copy it so I attached the pic into a word doc. (screenshot).
What the log says is that rundll32.exe was used to startup ddabc.dll which was the vundo virus. Don't know what that REALLY means but I found it quite interesting that mcafee allowed it without my permission. (I am set to check everything that wants access to anything on my computer)

This concerns me because I see rundll32.exe running quite a bit.

This next log deserves a separate post. Please don't hurt me for spamming. :P After reading up on google I saw that I have the Virumod trojan virus. So I looked for a good anti-Virumod and found this program. Here is the log: (I think I might be clean now, let me know) [Scan path] C:\WINDOWS\system32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtrpnn.dll infected with Trojan.Virtumod - will be cured after reboot C:\WINDOWS\system32\ccdjmxtx.dll infected with Trojan.Virtumod - will be cured after reboot C:\WINDOWS\system32\jpxiylvb.dll infected with Trojan.Virtumod - deleted C:\WINDOWS\system32\pufhipfk.exe infected with Trojan.Virtumod - deleted C:\WINDOWS\system32\qomlklj.dll infected with Trojan.Virtumod - deleted C:\WINDOWS\system32\rxgxooff.exe infected with Trojan.Virtumod - deleted C:\WINDOWS\system32\vuvxfhym.exe infected with Trojan.Virtumod - deleted C:\WINDOWS\system32\wnkginaq.exe infected with Trojan.Virtumod - deleted C:\WINDOWS\system32\yapnglbr.dll infected with Trojan.Virtumod - deleted C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\DEFAULT - read error C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\default.LOG - read error C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SAM - read error C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SAM.LOG - read error C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SECURITY - read error C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SECURITY.LOG - read error C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SOFTWARE - read error C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\software.LOG - read error C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEM - read error C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\system.LOG - read error
Hi Jameo,

Vundo is being very stubborn here. What happening basically is that it is "morphing" and changing names when you reboot. Let's try this tool that I have had some luck recently with on helping get rid of Vundo.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Log from Combofix.exe (Looking good man)

Hi Jameo,

Yes, things are looking better. How's it running?

Just some cleanup I believe.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C6039E6C-BDE9-4de5-BB40-768CAA584FDC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hnyboiff.dll (file missing)

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Reboot and let's run the Vundo tool one more time to see if it finds anything. If it does please post the Vundo log.

Let's also download and run the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.

    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.

  • Login on your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode:

  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)

    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
Reboot back into Normal Mode

Please post the AVG report and a new HJT log. Also post the Vundo log if it finds anything. I think we're close here.

Dave
I have noticed a very significant increase in start-up speed.

I ran VundoFix again and it came out clean.

When I finished the AVG Scan (took 2 1/2 hours!).
The "Save Report" button was greyed out. I took it as that one was already saved so I rebooted.

Well… turns out there is none. But what I can tell you is what files were quarantined. (everything was quaratined except tracking cookies, they were deleted)

5 files from system restore were quaratined. Named A00*****.exe (***** = number)

And big surprise the other 4 files were ones already in a quaratined folder. (all part of vundo. I recalled their names)

I really…. REALLY hope you don't want me to do the avg scan again for the full report. If I have to I must, but I would much prefer not to.

Thanks,
JAMEO
Hi Jameo,

No, you don't need to run it again. I think we're OK here now. Please do the following:

You can remove the Vundo tool now.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs: Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files,
cookies, cache, ect…

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

[*]SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.

[*]SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.

[*]IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

You should also have a good firewall. Here are 2 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
  • Microsoft Windows Update
monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scannersweekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.
