Hiya, my computer has been real slow recently and i looked at my processes and see smvalid.exe usin 98% to 100% of my usuage and i keep gettin pop ups from MBS billing me for a site ive never been to and cant get rid of it and i read somewhere it is malware but i dont have a clue as to how to get rid of it. I use Ad-Aware SE and its not detecting anything. Can someone please help me?

1. Please use the Brute Force Uninstaller script written by Metallica to remove this infection:

• Download the Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop:
  http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip
• Extract the zipped folder to a new folder you create called C:\BTU.
• To obtain the script: RIGHT-CLICK http://metallica.geekstogo.com/mbs.bfu and choose the option that matches your browser typebelow, to save it:
  • "Save Target As" in Internet Explorer 6
  • "Save" in Internet Explorer 7
  • "Save Page As" in FireFox
  Save it in the same folder you created earlier (C:\BFU)
• Close any open programs (including browsers).
• Click Start, Run, and enter in the command box: sc stop srservice
• Hit Enter and then exit the command prompt
• Next, reboot your computer while tapping the F8 key, and choose Safe Mode from the Windows Advanced Options Menu..
• Open Windows Explorer and Navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
• Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by double-clicking BFU.exe
• To the right of the "Scriptline to execute" field, click the folder icon and select your saved script C:\BFU\mbs.bfu
• Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
• Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
• Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
• Restart your computer and the unwanted MBS program should be gone.

2. Run HijackThis and check the following entry:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mbssm32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\smvalid.exe
Click "Fix checked" and exit HijackThis.

3. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

4. Reboot and post a fresh HJT log

Heya hunni, i cant seem to get my computer into safe mode. whenever i press f8 i get taken to a menu that asks what device i want to boot first and the options are floppy, hard disk, cdrom n realtek boot. ive tried so many times too.

Hi Stacie, What happens if you tell it to boot from the hard drive? What is the model computer? Looks like an Emachine? The other thing to do is try F5 instead of F8 and see what happens. Let me know how you make out. Dave

Yes, looks better. How's it running now. If all is OK then...

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

Let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

• SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
• SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
• IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

You should also have a good firewall. Here are 2 free ones available for personal use:

• Kerio Personal Firewall
• ZoneAlarm

and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):

• AVG Anti-Virus
• Avast Home Edition

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

• Microsoft Windows Update

monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners

• AdAware SE Personal
  
• Spybot Search & Destroy

weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.
