Hi,
Initially I got the windows shield & messages about infection and what looked like automatic scans coming up directing me to MS Antispyware 2009.

I followed some instructions on how to remove that manually ….crucial\MS Antispyware 2009…. directory and also some registry keys for this but something is still firing off to the internet and giving me an "ALERT Infected by virus" and going off to some website that sometimes starts with www.skfjkhcdcsh.com……
I ran Malware bytes anti malware and it cleaned or does whatever it does (if I ran it right !)
I then ran the MS Windows Malicious Software removal tool which found win32/Renos.BAH but don;t know how to get rid of that.
I then ran AVG again which is always running in the background anyway not hat it helped with this :(

One other thing that comes up is an official looking MS window asking to tun on the phishing filter - anythign I dont know I just close the windows ASAP.

Here is the HijackThis log :

Hello & Welcome to What the Tech
Please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Options, then click Track this Topic. Make sure it is set to Immediate Email Notification, then click Proceed.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • It will require more than one round to properly clean your system. Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! even if symptoms seemingly abate.
Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed.
If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave & if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have abandoned your topic.

Thanks

Gmer log
Hi ! Have attached all 3 log files - GMER took nigh on 2 hours to complete and showed a blank window & a pop up said "….no modifications…." - the file saved showed blank … which may be a good thing??? :) Since first post of HJT log AVG ran its scheduled scan yesterday (sorry about that) and it found & "removed" a few items. "Object name";"C:\WINDOWS\system32\rwh21LMw.exe" "Detection name";"Trojan horse SHeur2.WYR" "Object type";"File" "SDK Type";"Core" "Result";"Moved to Virus Vault" "Action history";"Moved to Virus vault" "Object name";"C:\WINDOWS\system32\rwh21LMw.exe (1684)" "Detection name";"Trojan horse SHeur2.WYR" "Object type";"process" "SDK Type";"Core" "Result";"Reboot is required to finish the action" "Action history";"" "Object name";"C:\Documents and Settings\Roger Palmer\Local Settings\Temp\5272.exe" "Detection name";"Trojan horse SHeur2.WYR" "Object type";"File" "SDK Type";"Core" "Result";"Moved to Virus Vault" "Action history";"" "Object name";"C:\Documents and Settings\Roger Palmer\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\QHRR7XMJ\216[1].jpg" "Detection name";"Trojan horse SHeur2.WYR" "Object type";"File" "SDK Type";"Core" "Result";"Moved to Virus Vault" "Action history";"" Thanks heaps for helping out - it's really appreciated. One thing I always wondered about with self help on the WWW is whether it wasn't the ultimate hoax put up by the author of the virus/trojan/malware in the first place ! ps. since the gmer.txt file is completely blank it wont "UPLOAD" ??? Roger
Hi

Checking your logs now. If I could ask you not to attach the logs but post the contents directly into your posts. Use a couple of replies if the logs are to big.
Thanks

With regard to Gmer… that should not have happened so we'll try this to se if we can get it to run:

Open notepad & copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into it:
@echo off
copy /y gmer.exe omer.exe
start omer
Save this as run.bat Choose to "Save type as - All Files" next to gmer.exe
It should look like this: [external image: Posted Image]
Double click on run.bat & allow it to run

Then, use these settings to produce a log.

  • If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO
    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections

    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply

Post the contents of the log if it runs correctly.
Hi, Sorry about attaching logs - misread instructions in another part of the forums. Done - but, not sure if you expect this, it failed to run & pop up says : "Windows can not find 'omer'. MAke sure you typed name correctly……" Not so good eh?
Hi
P2P Warning!
IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Azureus Vuze

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur.
P2P file sharing used to be fairly safe. That is no longer true. I'd like you to read the Perils of P2P File Sharing where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.
References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm
See Clean/Infected P2P Programs here

I would recommend you uninstall it by going to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red) & any other P2P programs.

These two programs:
CustomerResearchQFolder
MarketResearch

Did you install them yourself?

Delete your existing version of GMER, please. We will use a special version.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO

Combofix
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
A guide to do this can be found here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

OK…
Azureus is gone - I'm convinced it ain't worth going there again !

I did not install the items shown :
CustomerResearchQFolder
MarketResearch

GMER scanned for ages but then 'lost' the 3 buttons on lower RHS to save - the screen showed a bunch of jpg files all in one folder though if that helps.
It gave some sort of pop up error message about "delayed write" too which I could not copy.

Here is the Combofix log :
Note it installed windows restore but it was already on the PC as I tried using it last week on this issue and there was about 2 weeks of restore points listed.

Need some sleep so hopefully we can sort this tomorrow. The good news is I haven't had the popups about virus infection or automatic startups of IE this evening.

Thanks again for your patience !

Roger

Azureus is gone - I'm convinced it ain't worth going there again !

Note it installed windows restore but it was already on the PC as I tried using it last week on this issue and there was about 2 weeks of restore points listed.

There is a difference between the Recovery Console & System Restore.
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should things go pear shaped after an attempted removal of malware. Hopefully we wont need to use it. :)

Hi

HijackThis log looks good, however the latest Combofix log is not complete. The most current Combofix log can be found at C:\Combofix.txt. Could you open that log & post the entire contents.

Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, & also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 13.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Here
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the Download button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation & save the file to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs & remove all older versions of Java
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java™ 6) in the name
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH CheckedApplications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel
Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As…
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  • Please post this log in your next reply
This scan take quite a while to update & scan as it is exremely thorough, so please be patient with it.

Thanks again - I'm toying with the idea of going to 'school' so I can help others out like this as a worthy community service ! B)

Good morning in WA - altough it's probably about 3am in Port Hedland!

Good morning! Judging by the time of your post I'm guessing your SA somewhere?

Thanks again - I'm toying with the idea of going to 'school' so I can help others out like this as a worthy community service !

 The forums are always looking for more helpers, so let me know if you want any further info. There are a few quality schools to choose from.

Kaspersky flagged an odd looking file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit backup.exa Know anything about this? Did you rename the file extension from .exe to .exa?
If not do this:
Upload Files for Scanning
Go to VirSCAN & upload the following File & Path C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit backup.exa for scanning.

For VirSCAN
  • Copy and paste the following File & Path in the text box next to the Browse button.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit backup.exa
  • Click Upload.
  • Wait for scans to finish then copy & paste the results into your next reply.
Gidday - Geelong actually. Not my file & not renamed by me ! Here's scan; File Name : userinit.exe File Size : 59392 byte File Type : PE32 executable for MS Windows (GUI) Intel 80386 32-bit MD5 : 9af77dc02b3e11da3c3d28e0f840cff3 SHA1 : ed6b7229cecfc175c0516e56571396534e725e0b Scanner results Scanner results : 19% Scanner(7/37) found malware! OK.. one more round with Combofix & I think we're done.

CFScript
Close any open browsers.
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:

http://forums.whatthetech.com/MS_Antispyware_2009_and_Renos_BAH_contamination_t101293.html

Collect::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit backup.exa

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Roger Palmer\My Documents\Temp\Temp\temp.exe
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
**Note**
When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box–do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If thats all done from your end - thanks ever so much.
I've no idea if this took you an hour or all night but really appreciate you volunteering your time, energy and expertise.

I remember writing machine code back in about 1980 for a 6809e processor if memory serves…. a lot of work for very little reward and not even the concept of a virus was around !

About how long does it take to get through the 'school' and typically how long to guide someone through this.
It would be good to be able to help someone out each week but that depends on how long it takes typically.
You mentioned different 'schools' - what would you recommend?
