I have a problem with my computer rebooting itself. When it boots it won't boot properly and I have to use "last known good config…" to get it to go to desktop. I can't even start it in safe mode. I ran Hijack this and this is the log:

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.



3. Please download this file - combofix.exe by sUBs
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.
Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

5. Additonally, ComboFix will generate the following files on your desktop
  • A zipped file on your desktop called Submit [Date Time].zip
  • And another file named - CF-Submit.htm
6. ComboFix may need to reboot to finish its work. Let it.

7. When CF has finished running, it will generate the ComboFix.log which will appear on your screen.

8. Next, a window will popup prompting you to "Submit Files for further analysis". Click "OK"

9. Your system's browser will automatically respond by loading the CF-Submit.htm file and open a window :
  • Click the "Browse" button and locate the Submit [Date Time].zip file on your desktop.
  • Click on the file to Select it.
  • Submit the file by clicking "OK"
10. Once the file has been submitted, you may DELETE both files on your desktop.

11. Post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

A. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2…allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner (Use Internet Explorer as your Browser)

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE YO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Next Click on Free Virus Scanner, then Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Standard
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information into your next post.

I am unable to run the virus scan because the computer restarts on me and I have to start it with the last known settings that work from the dos screen.

Download & run this tool > SafeBootKeyRepair-CF from here: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/…eyRepair-CF.exe
It shall only take a short moment for it to finish running. A log shall be produced at C:\SafeBoot_Repair.txt. Please post that in your next reply.

Also try Safe Mode after that and tell me if you got into Safe Mode alright.

I did what you said and it didn't fix the safe mode problem. It still wouldn't start in safe mode. After highlighting safe mode it displays a list of files then reboots. This part I am not too sure how to edit so I'll get someone who really knows this stuff to direct us. The answer may take a couple of days. First I need you to post the content of your boot.ini file. To do that:

1. Right-click on My Computer, and then click Properties

2. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.

3. Under System Startup, click Edit.

4. Copy the content of what appears to be a text file into Notepad. (Do not add/delete anything)

5. Close the window

6. Post the content of what you copied into your reply.

The Operating System is using Last known good config because something bad happened to it, either a faulty driver was installed or some system files became corrupt or removed through an infection. When this happened is hard to tell. 1. Have you installed any new hardware lately? 2. Have you got your original Windows XP disc handy?

No new hardware installed recently. As for the Windows XP….yikes…lol….it's here I just have to find it. LOL I will do that tomorrow because right now I am ready to shut down for the night. I don't know what time it is where you are at but it is 1:40 AM here in Middle Tennessee.

Let's see if we can replace some missing or damaged critical system files:

1. Please go to Start -> Run -> type cmd and press Enter.

2. At the command prompt type sfc /scannow, making sure to put a space between the "c" and the slash, and then press Enter. This will run the System File Checker.

3. Follow the prompts, and insert your Windows installation CD if requested.

4. Then please REBOOT your computer.

5. After you have finished, please advise if any files were replaced. Also, do you see any improvement?

Okay I did that and it didn't ask for the XP installation CD AND it didn't fix the problem. So what now? BTW I am curious as to how old you are? It really doesn't matter but I am curious. LOL
