Somehow I have gotten a trojan horse in my system. I am using AVG-antivirus, spybot-S&D, ad-aware, and AVG-antispyware. All have been maintained up to date. I can run these programs to the point they all say there is no threat but when I get on the internet they reappear.
After I long on to the internet, after awhile the trojan just starts popping up all kinds of advertising pages. It has, I think, also frozen up my computer on a couple of occasions.
After being on the internet and then running my protection programs I am coming up with the following threats:
trojan horse dialer.HYB
antzom[1].exe
virtumonde
win32.agent.azk
smitfraud-c. toolbar888

The following is my hijackthis log: Thanks for any help you can provide.

Rename your copy of hijackthis.exe to seek.exe and post a fresh log run in Normal Mode. It's possible that a nasty is interfering with the normal working of HJT in order to hide itself and renaming the .exe will get around this.
* Please note that you need to rename the file itself - renaming a shortcut will prove about as effective as a chocolate fireguard!

Also, run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager…
  • Click Save list… and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.
First, thanks a lot for your help…

I renamed HJT to seek.exe and ran a new long. I wasn't quite sure what you meant, in normal mode, so I just ran it after rebooting. I also ran the uninstall manager and saved a list. Both of these were ran after running my "anti" programs and all said no threats.

The last scans found such as: virtumode - downloader,tiny.id - trojanhorsedownloader,generic4.ZQ1 - trojanhorseSHeur.ZQ - etc.

New HJT log and uninstall list are below:

I really don't know anything about this, but I compared the first log I generated with the second I generated using the renamed HJT (seek) and found these differences (I didn't compare letter for letter, just sort of line for line. The second list showed many more entries. In the second group of lines, 12th line down through the 40th line, entries "02 - BHO…". Then way on down in the 04 area there is a line "04 - HKLM\..rUN: [ICQ.COM] RUND1132.exe "C:\Windows\system32\usctqxck.dll",forkonce that was not on the first list. Thanks again for your help.
You are running an old version of Sun Java which needs updating:
  • Go here and click on the Download button to the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2.
  • Accept the license agreement by clicking the appropriate radio button and then continue.
  • Under Windows Platform - Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 2, click the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language link.
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any entries that refer to Java 2 Runtime Environment and then reboot your PC.
  • Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
  • Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Run HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:
Download Combofix by sUBs from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click combo.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
  • When the tool has finished, it will produce a log C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply.
  • Post a fresh HJT log as well.
  • Let me know how the PC is behaving.
Please Note:
  • Do not mouse click in the combofix window while it is running - this may cause your system to hang/crash.
  • Disable Script Blocking if you have NAV installed as it will interfere with the normal working of this tool.
  • Should any security program warnings appear, ignore them as they are false-positives - this tool isn't malicious.
Noviciate, Thanks so much for your help. I believe you have slain the dragon. I followed your instuctions exactly and have used the computer (internet) for over a day without any problems. I have ran AVG, AVG-Antispyware, and Spybot S & D several times with no problems / threats found, other than just the normal tracking cookies. Do you have a favorite anti-virus and anti-spyware program?
I am posting the logs as you requested:
For some reason I could not find C:\ComboFix.txt, but did find ComboFix-Quarantined-Files.txt
Thanks Again!!!
Looks good - sUBs scores again! A little tidying-up and that's you done.
1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following, and then reboot your PC:
Outerinfo
2) Run HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I want you to run your PC as normal for a few days and when you are happy that everything is fine, do the following:

Disable System Restore,
Reboot your PC,
Re-enable System Restore,
Create a Restore Point - this will give a clean one should you need it in the future.
A tutorial for System Restore is available here.

The reason for waiting is that if removing the malware has caused a problem, which it occasionally does, you can put your PC back to how it was before the fix. This will re-install the malware, but an infected PC is better than an expensive paperweight!

Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet.

If you have the time, pay a vist to Malware Complaints and register a complaint about the malware that has infected you - in your case it was a Virtumonde/Vundo infection. If enough people take the time, it could make a difference.
I went to the control panel>add/remove but these was no "outerinfo" program shown. I also did a file search for outerinfo but nothing was shown. I did a hijack system scan and deleted "R-3 - URL…". It did delete it as I ran another scan and it was not there. But I have deleted it a couple of times before and for some reason it keeps returning. I will use the computer for a few days and then follow your other recommendations and read the tutorials. I am going now to file a malware complaint. The computer is running great. Thanks again.
Computer has been running great (and still is), last night I ran an AVG anti-virus scan. There hadn't been any threats for 5 days. It brought up the following threats: TH BHO.AD in C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\Windows\System32\keivpijw.dll.vir deleted TH BHO.AD in C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\Windows\System32\idrjdpjt.dll.vir deleted Then it ran an automatic scan about two hours later (I hadn't even been on the computer and found: TH BHO.AD in C:\SystemVolumeInformation\_restore{various numbers} deleted TH BHO.AD in C:\SystemVolumeInformation\_restore{various different numbers} deleted I haven't even downloaded any files. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Denny
I have used the computer and been on the internet, and have ran a couple of scans and the BOT.AD trojan has not showed back up. I never saw any negative things happen (hijacking) while it was apparently still there. All seems to be good. Thanks, Denny

I went to the control panel>add/remove but these was no "outerinfo" program shown. I also did a file search for outerinfo but nothing was shown.

ComboFix probably dealt with it, but there was no harm in double checking.

I did a hijack system scan and deleted "R-3 - URL…". It did delete it as I ran another scan and it was not there. But I have deleted it a couple of times before and for some reason it keeps returning.

It's associated with I.E. - not sure why it gets recreated, but as it's marked "(no file)" it gets fixed as standard. It's a housekeeping thing rather than a malware thing.

It brought up the following threats:

TH BHO.AD in C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\Windows\System32\keivpijw.dll.vir deleted
TH BHO.AD in C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\Windows\System32\idrjdpjt.dll.vir deleted

Look at the file paths: C:\QooBox\Quarantine. These are malicious files that have been removed by ComboFix and stored in a quarantine folder. This is partly to allow for samples to be collected and partly to protect against false positive deletions.
They don't present any threat to your PC, but you don't need them.

Then it ran an automatic scan about two hours later (I hadn't even been on the computer and found:

TH BHO.AD in C:\SystemVolumeInformation\_restore{various numbers} deleted
TH BHO.AD in C:\SystemVolumeInformation\_restore{various different numbers} deleted

SystemVolumeInformation refers to Restore Points that have been created. Any malicious files that were present when a Restore Point was created get backed up and they will show up in a scan. They don't present a threat either, but if you do restore the PC using an infected point, the nasty gets restore too.
Flushing System Restore deals with this problem - see my last set of instructions.
