Hi there,…I'm new here and this is my first post. My AVG antivirus is telling me I have a Trojan Horse Downloader.BF virus on my computer :(. I'm running a Dell Dimension 2.6 Gh P4 with Windows XP. I've had this virus for two days now and have used Ad-aware and Spybot to scan and pick up bad files, but it's obviously not getting at the root of the problem, because my AVG Resident Shield keeps throwing up its warning of infected files, and my homepage keeps coming back to this………res://wrhng.dll/index.html#37680,….and there are pop-ups like crazy.

I've read over some posts here on this forum, and have tried getting rid of some bad files using HijackThis (1.98 version), ….but I'm hesitant about removing anything I'm not really sure about.

I've eliminated some RO and R1 items which were definitely the hijacker's URL,…but they came right back again.

I feel like I'm not following the right procedures in the proper order, and could use some help.

Thanks in advance ……….this looks like a great forum!! :)

here's my HijackThis log…..

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.com!

May your day be blessed by those you love and those you love be blessed by HIM. - Coyote

Before we start, let me say you have the "latest and greatest" infection going on the Internet.

We're going to be trying the same method that seems to have worked in this thread:

http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?show…11483&hl;=#37680

We're just changing the file names.

By the way, the FEWER times you reboot until we are done, the better off you are. Each reboot causes the infection to "morph".

After we get the browser unhijacked, I have 3 links to online virus scanners for you.

Lets try this method for dealing with the problem.

Please download and unzip About:Buster from either of the following locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/AboutBuster.zip
http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This! and fix these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {63EDD3FE-AFF5-BAA7-633A-B83D248F62B6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\winyj32.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [crfn32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\crfn32.exe

Close ALL Internet Explorer windows.
This is a very important step!!
Run AboutBuster.exe, click ok, then start, then OK.
This will scan your computer for the files responsible for hijacking your home and/or search settings/page. (It takes a while to complete)
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log back here along with the report from About:Buster.

:)
Hi Micah!

Thanks for your reply, …..for some reason I haven't been able to open a window on TomCoyote, so I couldn't check your reply,…….and a short while ago I tried something called HS Remove from here…

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4286.html.

Maybe it's similar to About:Buster. It's a download which scans the system and seems to have worked so far. It removed 16 items from my computer, and I was able to re-enter my original homepage, and it seems to be staying, although I haven't re-booted yet. Should I go ahead with About: Buster, too?

Here's my latest HijackThis log……Why does the BHO file you said to remove still come up,…but with (file missing) at end ?….

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {63EDD3FE-AFF5-BAA7-633A-B83D248F62B6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\winyj32.dll (file missing)

this one is still there….
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [crfn32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\crfn32.exe

WOW! :weee:

Since you've "deviated" from the plan (and it seems to have worked so far  ) let's switch to "Plan B".

Push these 3 keys at the same time:

The task manger appears on the screen.

Click the "Processes" tab.

Scroll through the running processes and find:

crfn32.exe

Click it to highlite it, then click "End process". If it's in there more than once, repeat this find/highlite/end procedure until all instances of it have been terminated.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This! and fix these items:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {63EDD3FE-AFF5-BAA7-633A-B83D248F62B6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\winyj32.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [crfn32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\crfn32.exe

Then, using windows explorer, find and delete:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\crfn32.exe <— file

Reboot and post a new log file. :)
Hi Micah……….

Thanks again for your help. Things are working better, now, and I think my home page is going to stay at …..http://www.google.com/…….where I originally kept it. :D

I did the searches for the
C:\WINDOWS\system32\crfn32.exe file, which you suggested doing, and found nothing,…..nowhere in my system.

Here's my latest HijackThis logfile….
