Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ContraVirus] C:\Program Files\ContraVirus\ContraVirusPro.exe /s
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbaredits/…arch.jhtml?p=ZR

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following file, and DELETE it (if still present):

    Now try to delete: CFSCRIPT.EXE

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren
I deleted the file of Contravirus by click and holding the mouse and dragging it to the recycle bin. Here is a brand new fresh Hijackthis log.

Your logs look clean. I think it would be wise to do an in-depth check of your entire system just to make sure that no malware is still lurking:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner (Use Internet Explorer as your Browser)

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE YO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Next Click on Free Virus Scanner, then Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Standard
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information into your next post.
Please also tell me how things are now running.

Regards

Hey Trevuren, I am sorry if I wasn't able to reply earlier but I was away working and I had no chance to get online. Well, the computer is acting better now. Everytime i Used to turn on the computer I used to get that black popup screen saying Winxpuupdate.exe but thanks to you I fixed it. I still have to do the KASPERSKY online scan, I tried doing it earlier and bad news  It found viruses but i had to cancel the scan because I was late for work. Now I am going to scan it again and show you the results. I really appreciate all the help and patience.
Just as I feared, it found a bunch of files infected: Here is the list. ——————————————————————————- KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Wednesday, July 25, 2007 4:03:32 PM Operating System: Microsoft Do not fear, Trev is here. Sorry, bad attempt at humor.

Contrary to what you think, things look very good. All infected items are in areas that are Quarantined or equivalent (Just where you and I put them)

A. Please DELETE the following file: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BackWeblite1.zip

B. Now we need to clean out your Java Cache:

Clearing Java Cache
Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)[external image: Posted Image]
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    • Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

C. Finally clean out the content of your Norton Antivirus Quarantine

D. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures and recommendations.

Trevuren
Trevuren!! Thanks for everything and all the help, right now I don't think my computer is infected that I am aware of. I followed all the steps you told me. I was wondering, like in the future if I get the same problem involving Zlob.DnsChanger should I come back here to the forum?? or should I just follow all the steps and use the programs I downloaded from here such as SDFIX, Fixwareout and Combo fix??
I guess it depends on how clean you want your system to be? The tutorials are excellent to remedy the immediate problem but most of these infections carry a lot of extra baggage that downloads their own little friends, most of which are not covered by the fix in the tutorial. How would you know what tool to use for Zlob? There are many variations and some require different tools. ComboFix should never be used ny a non trained person. It is very powerful. All things to think about.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Time for some housekeeping

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Run the tool by clicking on the icon.
  • Click the Cleanup button.
  • The tools that we used as well as this one will be removed from your system.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3. Now Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,

Trevuren
HEllo Trevuren, I want to thank you for everything you have done for me. I got to download SpwareBlaster like you said but Spywareguard link is not working, and I tried to download it also from download.com and it didn't work.

My computer has been running a lot better, thanks for all the help and professionalism you have demonstrated.
