[Resolved] Zlob Malware! HELP!

:pullhair: I did a google search for a new article, and went to a website that I thought was a news site. But when I clicked in the window to enable scroll down, I got a laugh. PCCillen did nothing–not even alert me. AdAware found a zlob file, which I deleted. SpyBot apparentlly found a zlob file, but froze during the search. When I ran it again, SpyBot found nothing. I am concerned that it is still on my computer. I had a similar issue in January, with which I received help. But it was complicated and I don't know that this would be resolved the same. I am concerned that it is sending back my passcodes. Can someone help me?

I read CastleCops tutorial on HijackThis and fixed several entries according to instructions. My computer froze on restart., once in safe mode. The second time it booted up in safemode. Then it booted up normally.
I revisited responses from LDTate in January 08 regarding a previous zlob infection. I downloaded and ran ATF Cleaner. Then I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. At one point it froze, and I had to turn off my computer and restart it. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware did not find any infections.
I ran HijackThis again. Again I got the error message, "For some reason your system denied write access to the hosts file…" Following is a current HijackThis log.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.



Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.


(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Thanks LD. I did everything you said but there is a problem with Combo Fix. I downloaded it to my desktop and opened it. It initializes, but then just before the green bar is complete, it disappears. No report, nothing. I exited all of my spyware so that there was no problem there. But I deleted and reinstalled Combo-Fix three times–same thing. No report–no nothing.

  • Now physically disconnect from the internet and STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)
  • Click on your START button and choose Run. Then copy/paste the entire content of the following quotebox (Including the "" marks and the Symbols) into the run box.

    Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

    "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

  • Click OK and this will start ComboFix in a special way.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to a Notepad File to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

* After you have saved the logs, restart your system to re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix.

* Reconnect to the internet

* Post the following logs/Reports:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.

Hi LD. I stopped every anti-virus, malware service that I could think of, even going into the task manager and stopping services after the right-click stopped working on the Trend Micro icon. I pasted the command into Run, like you said. But I am sorry to say that combo-fix reacted the same way as before; just before the green bar reached the end it stopped, then nothing. Still no log.

That's because you're running Vista. I'm not seeing anything bad in your logs. How's it running?

My computer seems slow, and often takes a lot of time to process commands, follow links, etc. Other times not. Mouse clicks often do not register and I have to hold it perfectly still and strongly click the button for it to work. A "personals" website that I visit opens a window with "about.blank" in the address bar and then shuts down. But I don't know if these are the result of the infection, now gone, or if it is still here. If gone, I odn't know how to fix them. But obviously I'm worried that the zlob is still present and doing harm, and sending my information soimnewhere. I can still do a hijack this log and post it. ComboFix just won't run and post a log. What do you think? Bobby

1. All tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)
With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Next:
You need to disable all your protection.
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

Hi LD. I went to the site that you suggested, but it did not include trend micro antivirus. I did everything else that it recommended. I closed everything that I could. But the Windows Security file said that Spybot informed it that it was still running. I checked 'processes' –everything; I could not find it anywhere and could not turn it off. So I uninstalled it. I rebooted and went through the entire process again. But this time I could not turn off trend micro, so I shut off every process related to that, and every process that did not ssm necessary. I ran Combo-Fix as administrator, but it still stopped before the green bar reached the end.
I ran hijack-this as administrator. Here is the log.

  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Done. There was a ComboFix folder in C:\ with a .exe file as well, apparently from the fix in January 08. I deleted both as well as the one on the desktop.
