When I start my PC there is an unknown executable bwgo0000????.exe in task manager (the 0000???? is a different hex number every time I reboot). The exes are created in C:\docs & settings\<user name>\..\temp. There is no other obvious damage but it looks as if it is trying to access the Internet.

Any suggestions on how to remove it would be very welcome

Hi Deri,

Please open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked and OK the prompt.
Then click Config and then Misc Tools
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.

I seem to have enabled a set of asian languages that have previously been disabled (all the \IME\ files) dunno why

The bwgo000<hex number> executable is no longer present or running and the computer's behaviour seems just about stable and OK excpet that I am concerned about not installing the security updates.

I think the cause of the temporary files is a program called Logitech Desktop Messenger, which it looks like you may have just uninstalled. Please let me know whether you have uninstalled it, because if you have, there is a startup entry which we should clean.

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

With regard to security updates, are you using Windows Update to install them?
Please try again and post exactly what happens when you try to update, when it fails and what the message(s) are.

Hell I am not able to work on this during the day (doing my day job) so slow response - apologies. Answers: - 1) Yes I uninstalled all the Logitech stuff to reduce the number of candidates for malware. Where is the startup entry that needs deleting? 2) Viewpoint uninstalled - anything else you would suggest as surplus? 3) I AM using Windows update both manually and automatically - with the same result. We'll get rid of the Logitech startup entry using HijackThis:

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Do you know what the AdMission Photo Uploader program is? I can't find out much about it but AdMission appears to be an advertising company.

I can't see any other programs I'd specifically recommend removal of. It's up to you to decide if something is surplus to requirements, but I'd recommend removal of anything you don't use.

You probably know this, but all the Windows security patches are vital for your safety online, so it's crucial that the update problems is resolved. Try these steps and see if it helps:

• Click Start->Run, type services.msc, and then click OK
• In the right-hand pane, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Stop
• Minimize the Services console window
• Use Windows Explorer to browse to this folder:
  C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
• Rename this folder to SoftwareDistributionOld
• Then maximize the Services console window
• In the right-hand pane, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Start
• Restart the computer, and then try visiting Windows Update again

Once complete, let me know if there has been any improvement.

I'm not sure what registry discrepancies you intend to look for, but any changes to the registry should be done with extreme care and must be done correctly or else your OS may be damaged beyond repair and require reinstallation. I recommend you do not make any manual changes unless you are 100% certain you know what you are doing.

If you decide to make changes anyway, please make a backup of your registry first using ERUNT:

• Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
  http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
• Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
• Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
• OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Thanks for asking! The last remaining basic problem was that Windows Updates were not installing. I followed several bulletin boards and MS Troubleshooter and found a solution quite quickly, after which I did not make any registry changes as they were not necessary. I now appear to have restored my system to its original state. I have cleared out all the old system restore points and created a new checkpoint and taken a full backup. I have also removed a few applicatiions that were unused. The next things I would like to to do are: - 1) Identify those appliations that I really need and disable those that I dont For example ctfmon.exe - is this really necessary? Task manager reports loads of things that I am unsure about which are not part of the OS Windows defender provides details on some applications but I hve not yet deleted anyting - more thoght required! 2) Update the Speedtouch ADSL Modem driver alcaudsl.sys which caused blue-screen death recently. 3) Install this new software without introducing new malware: - Logitech camera software Canon digital camera applications iPod / iTunes latest Any suggestions on utilities to prevent/detect malware or any other extraneous software (admittedly this could be difficult) would be welcome. I use McAfee for anti-virus/firewwall/spam etc and it seems to work fine. All the above is well off the original topic so I understand if no poss to respond. Re: identifying programs:

First, I recommend you go through your Add/Remove Programs list and remove anything you don't need.

Next, either use the functionality within the program, or MSConfig to disable unwanted startup programs. To use MSConfig, press Start->Run type msconfig and press OK
Select the Startup tab and uncheck the items you wish to disable. I strongly recommend you leave the Boot and Services tabs alone.
You can check what each startup program is using the CastleCops StartupList. For example, here is the search result for ctfmon.exe. I can't see anything in your Startup section that is essential for the operation of your computer, however you should leave all security related startups in place.

Re: Updating modem driver

All I could recommend would be to download the latest version from the manufacturer's website and follow their instructions.

Re: Install new software

Installing the software you describe should be straightforward, the key to ensuring you don't introduce malware is to be sure the source of the software is safe. I strongly recommend you only install device drivers and related software from the original media that came with the device or downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:

Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You have a good security software installed, however I recommend you also install specialist antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this will protect you from a wider range of malware and also that it will protect you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.

Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
