Need assistance, please…

One of our salesmen is experiencing a VERY slow computer. He is claiming it takes literally 5 minutes to open up applications, such as Word or Excel, or attachments included with his e-mail. He laptop is a Dell Latitude D610, Pentium 'M' 1.86 GHz, 1.6GB memory and an 80 GB HDD, running XP SP2… As far as I know, he is up to date on running AdAware, Spybot and scanning the laptop with Symantec AntiVirus. Attached is his HJT log file:

Howdy Coyote_9,

Looks like a normal loaded business laptop setup here. Were any infected files found in any recent scans? A fairly common question to ask when it comes to slowness of response is how often is temp storage cleared out on this system? Post back on the scan info, and have the person also go Here and download ATF cleaner. Click on the downloaded file to run it, and select "Select All", then click Empty Selected (and close ATF).

If he has them, also click on Firefox/Opera at the top and repeat the steps (and close ATF). Firefox/Opera will need to be closed first for the cleaning to be effective.
He's not getting any notices about viruses or infected files that I know of (we are automatically informed of anything during a virus scan), but I will ask just the same, in case we missed something… Thanks.
Yes, in fact also have him update Norton, then reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 at startup and select Safe Mode) and run a scan then. If anything is found he should try to save a log of that for us to review here.
Sorry for the delay… He did everything as instructed, but nothing was found… It is still running slow as a dog in the middle of summer… Said it takes about 9 minutes to open a Word document… Could the problem be in the Office application itself??
Almost sounds like either something doing a lot of work in the background slowing things down or a file access issue. Any chance he has a folder on the desktop (not a shortcut - the folder itself) being used for storage of many files/large files? Since we have this chance to check let's take one additional look, then if nothing amiss you might want to post a new request at the TC Other Computer Problems forum.

Go Here and download Silent Runners to your desktop. Run it, and post back here the log it creates. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back here.
Okay, here is the log file:

"Silent Runners.vbs", revision R50, http://www.silentrunners.org/
Operating System: Windows XP SP2

Nothing amiss showing in that either. Not that I would hope it is malware, to provide the solutions I might have at hand, but here it doesn't look like an issue to get answered in this forum. Laptops can be quirky, so hopefully it isn't some hardware getting ready to retire. But best if you followed up with a new request at the other forum.
Oh well…. Thanks for all of your help! I really do appreciate it. I'll try the other forum, per your suggestion and see what happens..
