Hijackthis 1.99.1 HijackThis 1.99.1 There seem to be 2 instances of Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 I don't know what the following programs are: S3Gamma2 S3Info2 SalaryExpert EPro ProSavageDDR and Utilities Signature995 I don't know where this came from: Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor Thanks again for helping. BTW, what is the difference between "Add Reply" and "Fast Reply" in this forum software?
OK. Yahoo is gone again. Here is the Hijackthis log following it's removal.

There is an item down the list that starts with "016 - DPF…." that contains the word "Yahoo" in the line.
I isolated it to make it easy for you to pick out.

Hi Drgoodbones,

Will I need the Symantec live update and live reg for PCAnywhere? I'd be happy to get rid of them if I can.

My apologies! I didn't know PCAnywhere is related to Norton. In that case, I would leave liveupdate, just incase it is needed.

There are 2 instances of Hijackthis in the list.
Hijackthis 1.99.1
HijackThis 1.99.1

That is fine. Each one removes something different from HijackThis, so nothing to worry about.

There seem to be 2 instances of
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

Not sure about this. Most likely there is a reason, so I would not worry about it.

I don't know what the following programs are:
S3Gamma2
S3Info2
SalaryExpert EPro
ProSavageDDR and Utilities
Signature995

- S3Gamma2, S3Info2 and ProSavageDDR are related to graphics.
- SalaryExpert EPro: remove this, if you do not know what it is.
- Signature995

You can remove this with HijackThis.

Let me know how it goes. :)
Sorry, I forgot to answer your question:

BTW, what is the difference between "Add Reply" and "Fast Reply" in this forum software?

"Fast Reply" opens a message box at the bottom of the screen. This allows you to type a quick post with basic features, and no post preview. Whereas, "Add Reply" has more options that you can use for your post, and you can also preview your post.

Hope that helps! :)
 :wall:

Trogan, what am I going to do? That damned Yahoo is back.
I ran Hijackthis to remove that 016 reference with Yahoo in it …. and the home page was back to Yahoo.
I think we ought to get up a class action suit against Yahoo.

Anyway, here is the Hijackthis log as of 2 minutes ago on Tuesday morning.

Lets try this:

Uninstall Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 from Add/Remove programs, as this could be causing a problem.

Then, remove these, again, with HijackThis. Make sure you have everything browser windows closed.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com

Let me know the outcome.
OK. I did it. I'll report tomorrow. Wouldn't it be a kick in the teeth if a spyware program was highjacking my browser?
Uninstalling Spybot made no difference.
Yahoo was gone all day yesterday but back when I opened IE today.

Here is this morning's log.

I isolated the "016" entry for you that contains the word "Yahoo".
What is http://us.dl1.yimg.com ? Do you think it is significant?
I tried putting it into IE and it popped up a Yahoo search page.

This is strange!

1. Download this file to your Desktop - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
I cannot run combofix.exe. It generates an error window entitled: "swreg.cfexe - Application Error" The message is: "The instruction at "0x7c911de" referenced memory at "0x00640061". The memory could not be reaD". What now?
Hmm…lets try this:

Please do an online scan with Panda ActiveScan

- Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open…click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it

Trogan, I think I found the culprit. The spyware program I have been using (XoftSpySE) appears to have been resetting the browser's home page. Evidently the intent of the software is to reset your home page to what you want in the event that it was hijacked. I had the browser set to Yahoo as a home page at the time I installed that spyware program. Later I decided that I just wanted IE to open blank, and that's when Yahoo kept coming back every day. I have changed that setting in the XoftSpySE program. We'll see if that makes the difference now. What spyware program do you recommend that I use? Sorry for all the trouble for nothing. I feel sort of silly now. Dr. Dave

Use an AntiVirus Software

It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See the link below for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs.
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=53#53

Update your Anti Virus Software

It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall

I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below.

Happy Surfing! :)
Thanks, Trogan. I have always used a firewall. I have my network behind a router, and I used the built-in Windows XP firewall. I used to use Zone Alarm, but from what I can tell, WindowsXP is now using Zone alarm (maybe it's "Zone Alarm Light"). I use AVG from Grisoft for virus protection. The free version seems to work very well. Should I be using a heftier software firewall than what is built in to WinXP ? What anti-spyware/adware do you think I should use? You listed quite a few of them. Do you have a favorite or two? Dr. Dave
