I have run several spyware detection programs, registry checkers, etc. I remove the Yahoo references. I set the IE7 options to "about:blank" for a home page. About a day later, Yahoo has taken over again. I don't know if it's dangerous at all. It certainly is irritating. I am running: WindowsXP-Pro AVG virus checking Windows firewall I am behind a router/firewall. I will be greatly appreciative of your help. D. Williamson
Hi D. Williamson, and welcome to Tom Coyote!

I'll need to see a HijackThis log please.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe, and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Copy and paste the log here
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Thank you. I can't tell you how I appreciate you. Here's the log file.

Hi Drgoodbones,

Glad Yahoo never returned! :)

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version…

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove the following…
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Apart from that, the logs are clean. Anymore problems or can we mark this resolved?
The updated Java is installed.
Yahoo continues to hijack the home page.
Following is the new Hijackthis log.

Thanks for your help.

Hi, sorry for the delay.

It seems to me that a piece of software is putting Yahoo! back.

I need to see another log from HijackThis.
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
  • Press the Save list button.
  • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
  • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.
Thanks. There are 3 or 4 things in the uninstall list that I do not recognize, and the titles give no clue to what they are. There are a couple of things that are in there twice. Hi Drgoodbones,

There are 3 or 4 things in the uninstall list that I do not recognize, and the titles give no clue to what they are.

Could you point them out to me please.

Also, can you confirm that eTrust EZ Armor is an Anti-Virus and Firewall? If so, are they enabled.

Looks like you have some Norton leftovers, so lets remove those.

1. Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. From the list uninstall the following, if present:

LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate 1.6 (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate 3.0 (Symantec Corporation)

Also, remove the following entry with HijackThis, like you did previously:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com

Post a new HijackThis log, and let me know the answers to the above questions.
