Had been running Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D with some success. Computer getting progressively slower over last year. Decided to go commercial with Spy Sweeper. Ran scan and id'd 52 items, most of them cookies. However, computer runs even slower now. First of 4 user HJT logs below:

hi madcardad, more apps dosnt equal better protection. only need one or two antimalware apps and only one real time protection running, like spybots tea timer or avg guard. looks like you have or had ewido also, which is now call avg antispyware. i would uninstall some of these and keep only one or two max. as far as log goes, it looks ok.that macafee suite might also have a spyware component? shelf life

Started working my way through self-help this AM, but don't get far w/current speed. Was able to run ATF which removed some 1450MB of files. Will get rid of all except McAfee and Spysweeper. Have 3 other users besides myself. Any chance another user has something that is infecting us all, just doesn't show on my HJT log? Should I run HJT on each user and post, just to see? KAT

your malware scanners will cover the entire computer, including the other accounts.

Will get rid of all except McAfee and Spysweeper

sounds like your computer became slower after you installed spysweeper? maybe you should remove that one and see if things improve?

Got faster once I uninstalled everything but Spysweeper and McAfee. Still slower than I thought used to be, but then Verizon also reduced my speed, I believe. Going to digital with 6MB on Monday. Will see what happens with new service then check back with you. Thanks-KAT

Well, upgrade to Comcast Hi-speed did not improve internet speed. I'm guessing I've either still got something or could be general computer issue and not anything sinister. Any other thoughts before I look into a tune-up for my PC? Thanks-KAT

hi madcardad,

not anything sinister

dont see anything in the log and malware is usually evident to the user, like popups, ads, web page redirection etc.

have you always had mcafee and spysweeper? dont know what speeds your getting, but dont expect to see 6MB. also check speeds from different servers at different times of day to get a good average.

Shelf Life: Never really had a problem with any obvious malware issue-pop ups, redirections, etc. However, launching IE is very slow and speed to load pages just seems way too slow. I'm wondering if I've got some other type of hard disk issue because other apps, such as Quicken, Excel and Word tend to take longer to launch as well. Have had McAfee for several years. Not sure if I can see a connection between speed and McAfee. Spysweeper just added this last week. Do you still think I might be running too much stuff? KAT

. Do you still think I might be running too much stuff?

no, not really. just trying to rule out any software you might have installed that could be the cause of the problem

you might try disabling spysweepers real time protection if its running like this:

1. Open Spysweeper and click on Options > Program Options and uncheck "load at windows startup".
2. On the left click "shields" and then uncheck everything there.
3. Uncheck "home page shield".
4. Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".
5. Exit the program.

did you install IE 7.0 recently?
i think there is a option somewhere in IE 7 to set it back to defaults. cant check actually as iam in linux now
do you see alot of icons by the clock? they are running in the background and can chew up resources.

Shelf Life: Appreciate you sticking with me on this. At the office this AM but will check the following later today: 1. Disable Spysweeper real-time protection (as an experiment?) 2. I did upgrade to IE 7.0 in the last few months-certainly didn't improve anything. Will look for defaults command. 3. Do seem to have quite a few icons on the right hand side of my lower status bar. Will take a closer look and let you know what I have. KAT

hi madcardad, no problem. 1)yes, experiment 2))ok 3)click on the icons, look for options or preferences for the software not to start with windows. software can be started from start>programs. of course you want your Antivirus icon running. shelf life

SL- 1. Seems to be working faster with Spysweeper disabled. Didn't know I had some anti-malware on my McAfee, so running Spysweeper just duplicating and slowing things down, correct? Since I already paid for it, I can just run a Spysweeper sweep every once in a while. 3. Not as many icons as I thought-none that can/should be disabled. Seems to be working better for now. Let's give it a few days and I'll report back with further questions or "close" request. Thanks for the help. KAT
