Excuse me posting into the thread Simon V, SDFix has removed the worm but hasnt removed its reg entries so I thought its best to clear that up first so it doesnt look like the worm is still running. I'll make a slight adjustment later so it repeats the regfixes in normal mode to prevent it happening again but the log shows it removed the worm files so this part should be simple enough to complete

Hi Artemesia

Run Hijack This and choose Do A System Scan then place a check next to these entries

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\vdbezmzs\winlogon.exe
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\vdbezmzs\winlogon.exe

Close all open browser and other windows except for Hijack This and press the Fix Checked button

Can you set Windows to show hidden files and folders to remove the following shortcut as HijackThis usually has problems fixing it

Click Start. Goto MyComputer then C:\drive
Select the Tools menu from the top bar and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
UnCheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.

Click Yes to confirm then OK

Set this back once you have checked for the file by opening the same page and pressing the Restore Defaults button then click Apply and OK.

Goto Start > Run > and copy and paste

%userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\

Press OK and it will open the startup folder, check for a file named winlogon in this folder and if its found right click it and choose Delete.

Goto Start > Run > and type

cmd

Press OK and the command prompt will open, copy and paste this onto the cmd screen

rd /q %systemroot%\system32\vdbezmzs

Press OK and it will remove the empty worm folder, type exit and press ok to then close the command prompt

Next open notepad (Start Menu > Run > type notepad and press ok) then copy and paste the contents of the code box into Notepad making REGEDIT4 the top line.
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"winlogon"=-
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"winlogon"=-

Goto File on the top bar of Notepad and choose Save As, on the Save As Type area change it to all files then name it fix.reg and save it to your desktop, double click fix.reg (or right click and choose Merge) and allow it to be merged into the registry which will remove the entries.

Finally set Windows to hide system and hidden files as explained above by pressing the restore defaults button

Then reboot and post a new HijackThis log and Simon V will continue where he left off

Thanks Simon

Andy

EDIT: Also delete the C:\SDFix folder as it contains backups of the worm files which are not needed now,

Hi Simon

The Kaspersky scan log is very long. There may only be two lines you are interested in - those detailing the infected items. I will just paste in those lines. Let me know if you want it all.

HijackThis log is at the end.

Thanks :)

Thanks again Simon - you are a star.
Hi Simon As I haven't heard from you for a few days, I think I have no alternative but to reformat my drive. Thanks for the help anyway Jo
Hi Simon, I have reformatted my drive so you needn't follow this up anymore. Once I have got everything re-installed, can I post a HJT log here so that you can check I have everything I need? Thanks
Hi Simon I have completed my reformat and reinstalled windows, firefox, thunderbird, mcafee security suite, spybot s&d and ad-aware. Is there anything else I should do? Can I post an HJT log for you to check? 5 minutes later…. I have just finished running ad-aware and it has already picked up this: Infections Found =========================== Family Id: 993 Name: Win32.TrojanClicker Category: Malware TAI:10 Item Id: 300020987 Value: Root: HKCR Path: clsid\{c68ae9c0-0909-4ddc-b661-c1afb9f5ae53} Item Id: 300020991 Value: Root: HKLM Path: software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\browser helper objects\{c68ae9c0-0909-4ddc-b661-c1afb9f5ae53} Item Id: 300026070 Value: Root: HKU Path: S-1-5-21-1390067357-362288127-839522115-1004\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run Value: msmsgs Family Id: 725 Name: Tracking Cookie Category: DataMiner TAI:3 Item Id: 600000212 Value: Browser: Internet Explorer Cookie: C:\Documents and Settings\Jo\Cookies\index.dat msnportal.112.2o7.net s_vi / Item Id: 600000083 Value: Browser: Internet Explorer Cookie: C:\Documents and Settings\Jo\Cookies\index.dat realmedia.com RMID / Item Id: 600000083 Value: Browser: Internet Explorer Cookie: C:\Documents and Settings\Jo\Cookies\index.dat realmedia.com NXCLICK2 / Item Id: 600000332 Value: Browser: Internet Explorer Cookie: C:\Documents and Settings\Jo\Cookies\index.dat edge.ru4.com ru4.uid / Item Id: 600000332 Value: Browser: Internet Explorer Cookie: C:\Documents and Settings\Jo\Cookies\index.dat edge.ru4.com ru4.1320 / Item Id: 600000050 Value: Browser: Internet Explorer Cookie: C:\Documents and Settings\Jo\Cookies\index.dat tribalfusion.com ANON_ID / Item Id: 600000073 Value: Browser: Internet Explorer Cookie: C:\Documents and Settings\Jo\Cookies\index.dat adopt.specificclick.net LO / Item Id: 600000073 Value: Browser: Internet Explorer Cookie: C:\Documents and Settings\Jo\Cookies\index.dat adopt.specificclick.net UI / Family Id: 9999 Name: MRU Object Category: MRU Object TAI:0 Item Id: 1 Value: MRU Path: C:\Documents and Settings\Jo\Recent Count: 8 Item Id: 3 Value: MRU Registry Key: S-1-5-21-1390067357-362288127-839522115-1004\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs Count: 4 :rant2:
Hi Artemesia, Most of those objects found by Ad-Aware are Tracking Cookies, not the biggest threat to your computer ;). There is however one BHO detected, and I would like to see a HijackThis log to verify if everything is ok.
Hi Simon
I deleted the tracking cookies already - it was the registry key thing which worried me.
HJT log attached. When you look at it you will see that I have 2 firewalls. I know I shouldn't but at the moment I am not too trusting of mcafee. I will sort that one out later.

Thanks

  • Hi :)

    Prevention
  • Congratulations, your log looks clean. Please advise of any problems you are still experiencing, or follow these simple steps to keep your computer clean in the future:
    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab.
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is very imprtant that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
  • Stand Up and Be Counted!

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints, you have to be registered to post after registering just find your country room and register your complaint.
The infection you had was a Backdoor Trojan.
Hi Simon What about the BHO thing in the ad-aware log? Do I need to do anything about that? If not, is it OK to go ahead and change all my passwords now?
Hi :)

The BHO Ad-Aware detected was a legit one, and part of McAfee:

O2 - BHO: McAfee Popup Blocker - {C68AE9C0-0909-4DDC-B661-C1AFB9F5AE53} - c:\program files\mcafee\mps\mcpopup.dll

Don't worry about it :) Ad-Aware detected it, because known malware has the same CLSID (C68AE9C0-0909-4DDC-B661-C1AFB9F5AE53 in this case) as this legit entry.

You can change your passwords now, as your computer is clean again.
Simon, Thank you so much for your help. I had never needed to use a forum like this before and so I did not realise what havoc the hackers and virus writers cause. Reading all the posts on this forum has certainly been an education. The best lesson I have learned however, is to be thankful that there are people like you guys on this forum, willingly giving up your time to help all of us. Thank you Simon, and Andy Manchesta, for all your help. I'll be back regularly with an HJT log to check my system! Thanks again and bye. :wavey:
