Could A Trojan Be Disabling My Firewall?

A few days ago my son clicked on a link in an msn chat and seems to have imported a trojan onto the computer. It was picked up by mcafee virus scan and quarantined. A complete scan of the computer and several realtime scans have continued to pick up and delete the trojan. The detection name reported by the scanner is Generic QHosts.c The scanner also reported the following information:
File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Process: C:\WINDOWS\system32\vdbezmzs\winlogon.exe
Process Description : C:\WINDOWS\system32\vdbezmzs\winlogon.exe

Each time that I have rebooted the machine since then my firewall is disabled. I can reenable it using mcafee virtual technician, but it's disabled at each reboot.
I have scanned in safe mode and at DOS level and nothing is found.
Mcafee cannot seem to help me and I do not know what to do. I would really appreciate some help. The hijackthis log is attached.
Thanks.

  • Hello, and welcome to the forum.

My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.
I am currently looking over your log. As I am a trainee, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Hi Artemesia,

    Identity Theft
  • I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you. You have a Very Dangerous infection on this machine.
The infection is delivered by a password stealing trojan.
It allows outsiders COMPLETE access to every keystroke, account, and password you use while on this machine, and complete access to any other data present…

IF this computer has been used for any kind of important data, my best recommendation is to disconnect from the internet, reformat the entire drive and re-install your operating system and applications.

We can likely clean the infected files off the computer, and if you wish we will attempt to do so, but we cannot be sure that the infection didn't do something to your system to reduce the system security. In that instance, even after removal of the infection, you could be subject to another attack or takeover as soon as you re-connect to the internet.

The decision whether to reformat or not should be based on:
  • The use of the computer - this is the primary factor in the decision whether to reformat and re-install, or just disinfect.
  • The variety of malware - this influences the decision on whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect. IN THIS CASE we have a backdoor worm, the worst kind.
If the computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any Applications (programs). Those should be re-installed from the original source CDs or websites.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being:
Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords – for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.
While you are deciding whether to reformat and re-install, this can be a useful link.

Please let me know what you decide.
Hi Simon, Thank you for your reply. I have a couple of questions for you. Can you tell how long this program has been on my computer? Can it access anything, past or present? If I have not used the computer for shopping since it got on will my account info be safe or is it compromised as well? I have 2 hard drives - one only has music and photos. Can you tell whether those files are infected or not? Can I copy my data from the C drive onto the other drive while reformatting C or do I have to reformat both drives? Can you recommend a site where I can read up about all this - specifically how these programs infect a computer? Sorry for all the questions.
Hi Artemesia,

Sorry for all the questions.

No problem at all :) That’s what I’m here for!

Can you tell how long this program has been on my computer?

As you said in your first post, the trojan was detected by your anti-virus software a couple of days ago, when your son clicked on a link.

Can it access anything, past or present?

Yes. You have an IRC Backdoor Trojan on your computer, which registers every keystroke, and thus has access to all of your passwords (the one you type, that is). It can only access that data from the moment it is installed, until it is removed. However, as I have already told you, Backdoor Trojans can make modifications and compromise your system, so that it can never be trusted again. I will likely be able to clean the trojan from your computer, but the safety of your computer can never be guaranteed. The reason for this is that the infection can make undetectable changes to your security settings in order to re-install itself after the machine is cleaned and reconnected to the internet.

If I have not used the computer for shopping since it got on will my account info be safe or is it compromised as well?

Normally, that won’t be the case. Those trojans can register your keystrokes, and as such only if you log in to your account. I would, however, advise to change the password from a clean computer.

I have 2 hard drives - one only has music and photos. Can you tell whether those files are infected or not?

At this moment, I can not tell you if those files are infected. From what I can see, you only have that nasty Backdoor Trojan, and it’s nature is not to infect other files.

Can I copy my data from the C drive onto the other drive while reformatting C or do I have to reformat both drives?

Yes, that should normally not be a problem, but please only copy the data you really can't miss. Don't attempt to save any programs or files with extensions .exe, .com, .bat, .sys, .ini, .dll. You should save only data files *.doc, *.xls, .txt, etc. Do not backup programs at all. After saving your files, you should scan them with your AV while unplugged from the internet. Then don't reconnect until the reformat is complete and the Anti-Virus and Firewall are active.

Can you recommend a site where I can read up about all this - specifically how these programs infect a computer?

Here is an article by Microsoft on the subject.

Here are two more sites on the subject:

http://malektips.com/spyware_adware_0022.html
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/backdoor.shtml

If you have any other questions, please ask them.
Thanks Simon, I will read all this stuff and then decide what to do. It is a bit tricky as 4 of us use this computer. I will probably go down the reformat route but I am very reluctant to do that, mainly because I am not certain whether I will be able to get everything running properly again. Anyway, I will let you know what I decide. By the way, is the malware program lsass.exe? I was also worried about this file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\vdbezmzs\winlogon.exe I had noticed that winlogon was using up all my cpu. Thanks again This sums up how I am feeling: :rant2: :wall:
Hi Artemesia, Take your time to decide what to do :) For your interest… These are the HijackThis lines showing the infection: F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\vdbezmzs\winlogon.exe F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\vdbezmzs\winlogon.exe O4 - Startup: winlogon.lnk = ? lsass.exe is a legit process and deals with local security and login policies.
Hi Simon, I have been reading some of the other threads and I noticed that 'lost and confused' had a similar backdoor problem which appears to have been cleared successfully. Could I try to go down that route or is the problem I have different? or is it still possible that his computer may have a lurking problem? Thanks
Hi :)

lost and confused had a bigger problem than you (I know this because I cleaned his computer)… He had several Backdoor Trojans (you have only one), a Smitfraud infection and a Worm that spreads through the network.

All of these infections got cleaned, and I will be able to do the same with your computer. However, and I have told you this several times already, I cannot guarantee the safety of your computer after I've cleaned the active infection.

The reason for this is that the infection can make undetectable changes to your security settings in order to re-install itself after the machine is cleaned and reconnected to the internet.

This is why you have to concider reformatting.
Hi Simon, Sorry - I realise the best solution is to reformat but I am very nervous about doing that in case I can't get the computer working again. I can't find the drivers for my graphics card or my Office cd - boring stuff like that - that's why I am hesitating.
Hi Artemesia,

As I can see from your HijackThis log, you have an Nvidia graphics card. Here you can download the drivers for those cards.

With the Office CD, I can of course not help you. We can, if you wish, clean your computer, and if you later find your Office disk, you can still reformat.
Hi Simon, Thanks for your message. I have decided what I want to do. I would like, with your help, to clean up my computer to start with. The winlogon file hogs 99% of the processing and I can't do anything. Then I will get the drivers, sort out my software situation, and then reformat. Does that sound OK?
  • Hi :)

    SDFix
  • Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
    • Print these instructions or copy them to Notepad and save it to your Desktop, as you won't be able to access internet in Safe Mode.
    • Please reboot into Safe Mode. To do this, go to Start>Turn off Computer, and select Restart. Rapidly tap F8 just before Windows starts to load. In the menu that appears, select Safe Mode (Without Networking)

Once in Safe Mode, do the following:
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to reboot.
    • Press any key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load, the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
    Make an Uninstall List
  • To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

    [external image: Posted Image]

    5. Click on the Save list… button and save the file to a convenient location. When you press Save, Notepad will open with the contents of that file. Please post the Uninstall List, along with the report from SDFix in your next reply.
Hi Simon,
Thanks to AndyManchesta, I'm back in the game!!
I can now access this forum again and here are the logs you requested yesterday.
I downloaded a new firewall program yesterday and I now know the site the rogue winlogon program was trying to access. I have managed to block the outbound requests of the program so that is a small step forward.
