Hi Tallin,

I'll pop in with a quick answer, and Crow may have a more complete explanation to offer later.

It is quite possible that your DNS Service is not "running" (as in "Status" is not "started and running)

If the above is true, then your machine would have no way to perform the procedure you are asking of it.

Go to your Services
Start - Run - Services.msc - Enter
Scroll down to DNS Client
Double-Click on DNS Client, then select to change the status to Start. (Its OK to leave it as Manual, if that is the current setting, but you will have to repeat this procedure in the future if you elect to flush your dns cache again)

Now you can run your - ipconfig /flushdns

I highly recommend that you also clear your ipconfig and renew your ipconfig at this same time

start - Run - (type)ipconfig /releaseall
start - Run - (type)ipconfig /renew

Please keep us posted with your progress and any additional questions.

Dough, Great post and even more information than I requested. You are worth your weight in gold.

I have checked my DNS and you were right it was on manual, but not started! So since starting it my ipconfig /flushdns cleared for me as you predicted it would. Should I change it to automatic?

I also ran as you advised,
start - Run - (type)ipconfig /releaseall
start - Run - (type)ipconfig /renew
how often should I do this

Thanks for the link with further information, will put it away safely for another time after a good read.

Have not seen Crow about for awhile, hope he is keeping well.

Thanks again for helping me out yet another time.

kind regards, :wavey:
You are welcome Tallin. As we are all volunteers and have other obligations as well, there will occasionally be times when we seem to "disappear" for a while. You can see by the posted replies that Paws has been carrying the majority of the load recently, along with Shelf Life and other experts. We are truly blessed with some talented people here at TC. Rest assured that OCP receives attention from several talented helpers, and that the Membership itself proves valuable in providing helpful replies. I have appreciated your occasional help replies and encourage you and others to offer assistance when you are able. :) Glad you got it sorted. Others will likely learn from your work here. Best Regards Edit: I didn't reply to your two questions. Sorry. Leaving DNS Client Service as Manual is "OK", and is highly recommended by some, while others recommend that it make no difference. I like it as "Manual" and recommend you leave it that way. (You'll have to "start" it manually again in the future to perform ipconfig /flushdns, but that is easily done and should not pose a problme, since it is a rare procedure. as to the "frequency" of running "release and renew", …. Again it is pretty rarely necessary. I believe that you have a "dynamic IP", meaning that when you first turn your machine on, you are assigned a new IP by your ISP. This effectively "performs the release and renew function. ___________ It is "good practice" to completely turn off your Modem and Router periodically, because they, like other components, can gather junk and have files corrupted. I'd recommend turning off your Router and Modem once a month. If you already turn off everything including your Router and Modem on a daily basis, you are already accomplishing this. (If you don't have a Router, then just the Modem) Then perform the ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew at the same monthly interval. Some would say only needed once every 6 months or only if problems develop, so use your own good judgement with an "occasional" running of these procedures. Best Regards
Dough, Thanks very much for all that good information. Will do as you advise. I am curious about why this happened and can only thing that my Ghost image transfer to a new HD earlier in the week had something to do with the DNS setting in Services! The only other minor difference so far discovered was my IE shortcut was at the opposite end of the task bar after the image transfer………pretty minor for such a good result with Ghost 10. kind regards,
