Hi. I installed a webcam a month ago which didn't work too well. Things got sortof slow. Tried Webcam Instant by Creative. Slower still. Not uninstalled, but not plugged in either. Bought Uniblue Scanreg and had many things to fix. But then I noticed vsmon.exe was spiking every 20 secs or so. Never found great advice on that. Installed Uniblue Speed Up My PC. Somewhere there my EZ Firewall program control list showed all green checkmarks for every program listed. I restored twice. Back and then forth (because it took off all my daughters email - account and all). I reinstalled EZ Firewall, Anti-Virus, and PestPatrol. Now everything is like pulling teeth!! Please help! Thanks!!!!! My virus scans and pest scans turn up nothing.

hi fixitmama, i dont see anything that looks like outright malware in the log, but yes malware gets on your computer because of things you do or dont do.( see my website link) looks like you have two firewalls. one part of the CA suite. the other zone alarm? correct? only need one firewall two isnt better than one in this case. i would remove one via the add/remove programs panel then reboot after the uninstall. also this: Uniblue Speed Up My PC anything that has the words "speed up my pc" is most likely worthless. i would remove it also via the add/remove programs panel see if things improve. shelf life
Thanks for looking, Shelflife. I am confused on the Zone alarm/CA etrust firewall issue. I have no idea where the ZA came from, and it does not show up in the add/remove program list at all. Am I supposed to delete the Zone Alarm file out of the system32 folder? It is the Zone Alarm's vsmon.exe which is giving us most of the trouble. It spikes to 50% of the cpu every 20 secs or so. Two clicks and the computer has to slug along and catch up.

Thanks! Fixitmama
hi fixitmama, nevermind, it looks like CA uses the ZA firewall, just calls it eTrust EZ Firewall: [Zone Labs Client] "C:\Program Files\CA\eTrust EZ Armor\eTrust EZ Firewall\ca.exe before we go any farther–you must have purchased the suite– have you poked around the CA EZtrust website for FAQ/troubleshooting about the firewall or vsmon.exe shelf life
Yes, I have been poking around for weeks. CA has nothing on their FAQ concerning this, and yet there are so many people elsewhere trying to deal with it. I downloaded Spybot tonight and found Newdotnet, Tagasaurus and Wild tangent, all of which were removed. Computer a little bit faster, but vsmon is still popping tp 50% every 20 secs or so. The EZ suite I'm using is free from RoadRunner for all its users. Some are saying the firewall needs to be totally removed and reinstalled from time to time. Would the Windows firewall be good enough to allow me to do that? Do I do it in safe mode? In safe mode do I also unplug my RR modem thingy? Thanks! Fixitmama
hi fixitmama, if eztrust firewall is such a headache i would simply remove it via the add/remove programs panel. i have not used a software "suite" ever. is it possible to just uninstall the ez firewall? it should be listed seperatly in the add/remove programs list if so. you should see seperate entries for the firewall and the anitivirus. if the entire suite has to be removed all together (antivirus, firewall etc) i can provide links to free replacements. also if you want to just remove the entire suite and try another free firewall and antivirus let me know, can do that also, up to you. shelf life
Hey, sorry to take so long - got 4 kids… Downloaded Ad-Aware se personal and it found a few things. Lower level threats. Surfing was quicker, and youtube didn't jerk along. The slowest this goes is when I have Veoh open. We can download at a whopping 14 kb/sec then. Is the firewall trying to do something helpful by slowing it all down, or is it a glitch? I have EZ Armor and it installs whichever of the 4 I check - anti-spam, -pest, -virus, or the firewall. BUT, it only has a button for removal of the whole thing on the add/remove list. I have the option of "shutting down" the firewall. I don't know if that would be gone enough. Do, please, tell me about the other free replacements for this stuff. : ) Again, thanks so much! Fixitmama
hi fixitmama,

no problem.

it might be possible to uninstall the whole EZ Armor suite, reboot then reinstall everything except the firewall since thats whats causing the problem.
during the reinstall you might see a option to install selected items rather than all of them.

OR:
uninstall the whole thing, reboot once and go get these:
——————————————
avg free version(antivirus):
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
download, install update, follow install wizard

zone alarm free version (fire wall):
note: this uses the same component (vsmon.exe) that seems to be cauisng your problems now. but it may be a updated/newer version and be ok, only way to find out is to install it
http://www.techsoup.org/products/downdetai…p;downloadid=39

OR:
another (pc tools) free firewall for XP:
http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

the anti "pest" your covered there with spybot and ad aware

from a security stand point individual components are better than the all in suites.

shelf life
Thanks a lot! I'll go to work on that. My Adaware does not include AdWatch. Should I upgrade to that, or is the free version sufficient? Fixitmama
hi fixitmama,

My Adaware does not include AdWatch. Should I upgrade to that, or is the free version sufficient

not sure what the adwatch component is all about in ad aware, the free version should be plenty. but if you want to get it go ahead, it can only be good.–. sometimes i feel guilty about suggesting free versions of software, (all the malware forums do)the majority of these software manuf. also have paid versions. it cost money to produce and keep it updated, the malware updates are frequent. not trying to make you feel guilty either, just trying to find a balance somewhere. i use the free versions myself.

Hi Shelflife, When I tried to safemode-uninstall the EZ suite and install the AVG and PCtools firewall I ended up with vsmon still running, and could not connect to the internet in normal mode. I noticed that the firewall was saying it was receiving and sending packets, and I freaked. So I shelled out to the GeekSquad guys. Nice bunch. He said that vsmon must have been corrupted by some action that a lot of people do - hence all the vsmon problems out there. It took him 30 min to get rid of it himself. Couldn't do it until he booted with his special GeekDisc outside of windows. He put on Webroot Spysweeper and Trend Micro AV and just on the Windows Firewall. We now have no spam blocker as well. Somehow I feel unprotected with the firewall and don't know which way to go for reliable spam advice. Any help there? Fixitmama
hi fixitmama,

He said that vsmon must have been corrupted by some action that a lot of people do

well, what action would that be?

hence all the vsmon problems out there

oh really?

special GeekDisc

must be top secret stuff they have

iam being sarcastic of course, about the geek squad.
—————————————————————————-

could you post another hjt log. lets make sure the vsmon service is gone. i will use my "special tools"
windows firewall offers no outbound alerts. better than nothing though.
ive never used a spam blocker. you use outlook express right?

shelf life

-HMMM…he didn't say what action, but I'm assuming it meant installing web cams or downloading popular player software etc.

-I'm saying there are lots of people experiencing vsmon problems. Search vsmon +problems +cpu and you get 1257+ hits.

-Not top secret, but Greek to me!

-"special tools"!!!!!!!!! You men…..

-We are using Outlook express. Right now we have preview panes off. Can I put them back on and be safe??

So other firewall or no? and which?

Thanks for all of your help!!!!

hi fixitmama,

thanks for the info and laugh. log looks good. vsmon service is gone.

zone alarm firewall is popular. but it uses the same vsmon engine your other firewall did. but the problem could have been with some other software or like the "geek" said became corrupted. most likely its not the same one you where using. its worth a try anyway. its free also. install, try it out, problems, simply uninstall it and we can get something else. or try out pctools firewall. try them both for a few days see what one you like better. only use one at a time and uninstall it, reboot computer before installing/trying the other one.
