I'm not very computer savvy but trying. My computer was Booting slow; Running slow; popups; virtual memory was always increasing. I updated things per Tom Coyote site’s recommendations and did some things by looking at archives. It’s better now, but can you check my HijackThis log to see what I still need to do?

Basically I manually got rid of RGSVR3~1.exe (Purity Scan) and lruten.dat (VirtuMonde) that NAV found but couldn't delete; manually deleted some temp files that regular cleanup didn't get, unchecked some things in msconfig start tab, etc. I have saved a list of what I have done the last few weeks, so let me know if you need more details.

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'
It will not appear to have done anything, thats ok.

Download Hoster by Toadbee at http://www.funkytoad.com/hoster.htm
extract it to your desktop and run it. Click restore original host.

Next, run a couple of online virus scans. Note what was found and not cleanable.

OK. Thanks. I put HJT in a separate folder.
I downloaded Winhelp2002's deldomain.inf to my desktop and installed.
Downloaded Hoster and ran it (I think) It said Sample Hosts files on top left so I wasn't sure if I really did anything. There were 1,400ish? lines and then after I clicked Restore MS original hosts there were only 19.

I tried the 2 virus scan links and Panda link didn't work so I went there on my own and ran it. Log below. Nothing cleaned. Then I used the housecall/microtrend link and ran it but status screen just sat there. Tried several times. The last time it said idle. So I gave up on that one.

Then I rebooted and ran HJT again. Log below.

Download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite and post the results here.

I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure.
This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter.
When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry.
Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot.

Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it as a reply.

OK. I ran Ewido (no updates were available). I removed a few things (I recognized MidAddle - had a problem with that a few months ago) and ignored a few things I wasn't sure about (i ignored the firefox things at first- I had just installed that program last week, then decided they were just cookies and removed the rest that came up). I wasn't sure about these 1st 2 items.

In HJT I checked and fixed those 10 items you mentioned.
I could not find C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate in Win Explorer so I did not delete anything there.
The only thing I found in Program Files in SafeMode was TivoAutoUpdate so left that alone.
When I reboot this msg comes up: nwiz encountered a problem and needs to close. What is that?

I then ran the steven gould cleanup and got 11,667 files and 101 MB free. That felt good! I used the Standard setting but unchecked scan local drives because of a warning about MS Office in the Help section. Maybe I can clean the local drives manually??

Also, TivoServer is acting up all of a sudden. In task manager it uses 98% of CPU and then a msg comes up on reboot saying E access violation (?) and program needs to close. So don't understand that. I just stopped the process and unplugged the cable/router connection for now so I could use computer.

Also, in msconfig I noticed it was still in Selective mode so I selected Normal start up. It had just "use modified boot.ini" marked. It's been in that mode for a while (the only thing I changed yesterday was enabling all the start up items). Was that OK to do? The computer start up takes forever considering I just got rid of all those files. So let me know what's next.

FYI regarding my previous post- I got the tivo server to behave. I went to msconfig and unchecked some of the start up items (now that the bad stuff has been removed from there). So now the tivo server program is able to start without all that other junk starting. I need to know how to get rid of the start up stuff that I don't need. Or should I just leave it as is- with boxes unchecked? I was just guessing about what to uncheck- nwiz, QT, and others.

Spybot S&D lets you kill the 04's, the startups much like msconfig. Start Spybot click mode at the top left,
make sure that advanced mode is checked. Then click on tools on the lower left.
Then system startup, to the right is a double arrow bar click it to expand.
Now clicking on a value you will get a description of the command line. Removing the green
check mark will stop the startup, should you decide that you need or want it back just
replace the check mark. Restarting your PC will complete the change.
Remove the check marks from the ones listed below.

Thank you. I did all that you mentioned in Spybot. It is running and starting much better now. Is there anything else I need to do?

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option,
however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up
in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account
which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because
you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
