The first sign of a problem was discovered when I tried to type in an address in firefox's browser search field and upon hitting enter would be re-routed back to my home page and/or the last page I was successfully viewing.

Now my keyboard had begun to occassionally stop functioning properly, causing some, but not all, keys to suddenly stop working.

It was first noticed when playing around in the online chat environment Second Life. When closing the program and testing the keys by typing out "the quick red fox jumped over the lazy dog" in a text document, it was fine again. Rebooting the program seemed to fix the problem.

The second time it happened in the Second Life program again, but this time when logging out of the program, the text document test failed and many keys were still not functioning at all.

I ran Spybot Search and Destroy which only found and fixed tracking cookies.

I went to www.microsoft.com to get all updates but the browser stopped responding during several attempts (tried using IE first a couple of times and even tried using FF with an IE tab).

Here is my HJT Log:

Please HELP!
In my impatience I have now downloaded, run and let "fix" Ewido (AVG), Ad-Adware and SUPERAntiSpyware and have now left each running as well. Each only found tracking cookies and did NOT fix my browser re-routing problem. Since the keyboard malfunction happens only intermittently and is usually "fixed" by a reboot (and I just restarted now), I cannot report on that yet.

Here is my new HJT log since the running and rebooting of the programs mentioned above:

Another detail to note regarding the browser "re-routing"… when clicking on any tab (even when opening a link in a new tab etc.) the address of that page does NOT show up in the address search field. I had to open the bookmarked properties of this page in order to get the link to post in the "What To Do If You Have No Response in 5 Days" thread.
OldDellLappy,

Welcome to the forum, sorry for the delay in responding. All of our helpers search for logs with Zero replies to work and by replying to your own post you took yourself out of that category and thats the main reason your post was overlooked.

I am looking at a clean log, no malware or a virus that I can see. Lets do a couple of things and see if it helps.

Download and Install CCleaner
If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < – After it scans your system, when you click on the Fix button and it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

Depending on how your manufacturer set up your system, you may or may not need the Windows XP CD. If you have a I386 folder on your C:\ drive you may not need the disk.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
  • A new window will open…click the big "Check Now" button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
  • If you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
  • Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
  • Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
  • Save the log someplace you can find
  • Reboot
  • Post the Panda scan results in your next reply

If Panda does not pick up anything and the other fixes did not help then this could be a hardware or software problem and at that point I can direct you to our windows support site.
