I am not sure how much information you want, but I am truly trying to follow your guidelines! I think I am supposed to describe my problem and paste log below. If not, please forgive.

I have a lot more details as I have kept a running list, but the gist of my problem is as follows:
I am a medical writer and spend about 10 hours a day in XP/Word, Outlook, and on the internet constantly for research, etc. I typically run Word, an Olympus voice file, and a text expander during this time. I first noticed Outlook acting wicked; not sending/receiving, then slow/fragmented opening of Outlook itself, typing in outlook was delayed, dropped letters, etc. This last a while then abruptly on the 19th ish extended into Word. It appears that typing and text are out of sync; I can type at times anywhere from 5-20 strokes prior to it appearing on screen. This has not corrected at all; it sometimes gets much, much worse. I could go on and on about what all I have noticed such as disappearing cursor, caps lock suddenly on, keyboard shortcuts not working, etc. No mouse probs, this seems to be primary keyboard related although I do notice visually odd things at times as well; quick pulses on the screen, slow/screen on acid loading kind of thing, etc.

I have done the typical: Adaware, run virus scan, dumped files, cleaned disks, defrag. I checked what I guess most of the “average” literacy computer folks would do. I have changed keyboards, checked drivers, checked plugs and connections, etc.

Anyway, my livelihood is definitely affected by this. I average well over 30,000 lines per month, and this hinky thing has impacted my performance greatly. I truly would appreciate any help you can give me. I am quite desperate and no other source seems to be able to help me. Heck, I cannot even find a live person/phone number to call at Microsoft. Any thing on my list of issues in my soon to be written letter to Mr. Bill…

Ok, I think I am supposed to add my log here. I did the start up thing as well, but I do not think I am supposed to include that yet. Again, forgive if I messed up here and just let me know what else I need to include.

Thank you so much!

kamelia,

Welcome to the forum, sorry your having so many problems, but the good news is that I am not looking at any malware or viruses on your system. Lets try a few things to check a little deeper.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

ZTGServerswitch is part of Sony's Vaio support agent - designed by Support.com. Not required if the user does not wish to use the Vaio support agent and regarded as spyware If you use this then leave it be.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs

Download and Install CCleaner
If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < -- After it scans your system, when you click on the Fix button and it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

You can run both these system utilities.

Have you run the CHKDISK utility to make sure there are no errors on your drive ?

Doubleclick on My Computer.
Right Click on C:\
Click on Properties
Click on the Tools Tab.
Click on ERROR CHECKING
Check both boxes to fix any errors.

When you click to run it , it will ask you to reboot and run on the next start up.

Depending on how your manufacturer set up your system, you may or may not need the Windows XP CD.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Then run the trial of AVG Anti Spyware, if something is hidding on your system this program will most likely find it.

Make sure you follow these instructions correctly to Remove or Quarantine what it finds and also to save the report, without me seeing the report my hands are tied.
Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop. It's very important that I see the report so make sure you follow the instructions and save the log.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <-- Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <-- Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system <--Don't forget this
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important, I need to see that log.
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Let me see the AVG Report, let me know if any of the above helped and let me see a new HJT log. If AVG did not find anything bad then we can assume this is a windows issue and I can direct you to some windows support sites that deal with these sort of problems.
