The computer is no longer shutting itself down. I bought a cooling pad for it and that seems to have solved that problem. I've been avoiding making zips since I realized that was causing kernal_stack_inpage errors. I just tried one to see if the problem still exists and immediately when I tried to paste files into it I got a 'The compressed zip folder is invalid/corrupted' message, but it kept transferring. When I went to delete files, it froze for a while but finally fixed itself. Those are improvements I'll take. ^_^ By the looks of all the scans, does it appear that nothing of concern is out of order or needs fixed? It seems that every couple of months this computer has problems like these arise. I've had to restore to Windows three times this year. I have better protection software now, but I'm still concerned. A ways up I posted the results of a scan where many, many files from a C:\8418396dd571643e490a28a2ca\ folder that couldn't be accessed. As far as you can tell, is that a concern? I know sometimes folders with a random mix of letters and numbers can be something suspicious. I think that's it. In the past week it's been behaving better, and my originally posted problems seem to have dissapeared or lessened. I want to thank you and this board for being so helpful and in lessening the panic I came in here with. I know you're all volunteers and that makes me appreciate the help offered so much more. If there isn't anything in the scans to worry about and that folder is a system one or not a problem, then I don't have any other issues.
Yes, that folder is weird. Let's do this.

STEP 1.
======
OTMoveIt
Please download OTMoveIt by OldTimer from here
  • Double click on OTMoveIt to start OTMoveIt
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Untick the option to Unregister Dll's and Ocx's (1)
  • Select the contents of the below code box, then press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard
    C:\8418396dd571643e490a28a2ca
  • In OTMoveIt Right click on the box labeled Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved
  • Click Paste (2)
  • Click MoveIt! (3)
  • Copy and paste the contents of the results box (4) as a reply to this topic
Please post the contents along with another hijackthis log.
Folder move failed. C:\8418396dd571643e490a28a2ca\i386 scheduled to be moved on reboot.
Folder cleanup failed. C:\8418396dd571643e490a28a2ca scheduled to be deleted on reboot.

It said I had to reboot to finish moving the files, so I rebooted, and the file was still there. I did MoveIt again, and it said the same thing.

In the past, I've tried to delete the folder and look in it, both in safe mode, and it wouldn't allow me ("access is denied"). The only way I've been able to see what's in it is by doing scans. It says it was created in Feb, and in Feb. I tried to put Service Pack 2 on, but later took it off because it slowed my computer to a crawl. Is there a chance those could be backed up computer files, since the folder in it, i386, is also a name of a system folder? I don't get why it would be named a random string of numbers and letters, though.

Is there a chance those could be backed up computer files, since the folder in it, i386

I would guess that is the reason. I tried to search some of those files and the last character varied. Since none of the files were flagged in anti-virus scans, I think everything is fine.

Disable TeaTimer:
Please disable TeaTimer as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean. To disable TeaTimer:
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu , and make sure "Advanced Mode " is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer " and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable TeaTimer again.

Run hijackthis. Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

The blue screens have stopped, thankfully. I'm not sure why I was getting them in the first place, unless it was the spyware. The computer stopped shutting down randomly when we bought a cooling pad and cleaned some of the dust off. I haven't had any new problems crop up.

That folder is never gone off in a spyware or virus scan. That's the only conclusion I can think of - that it's system backup files.

Edit: I did a new "zip test" (adding files to a zip folder and then deleting some - something that used to trigger Inpage blueescreens), and everything went fine.
Hi xcacophony,

You need to install a firewall and not rely on the Windows firewall. Also be sure to update your Java, reset and re-enable your restore points along with the other recommendations.

I do not see a firewall application installed. Perhaps you have a hardware firewall but a combination of both a software firewall and a hardware firewall is better. Just be sure there are no conflicts. Please do not rely solely on the Windows XP firewall. Using a software firewall other than the XP firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:
Please test your firewall and make sure it is working properly.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic….39eba6ea0b5e8ee

Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  • Updating Java
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_10-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  • More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.
